Well i've always wanted to have either a baracuda or gar tank, and it seems there are some species of both of them that would fit in either a 100 or 135 gallon tank.

i was wondering if it would be a good idea to keep either one of these and what all i'd have to make sure to do wiht the tank to make it good for them. thanks.

Personally I don't think either would be well cared for or happy to be placed in that size tank, no matter what the dimensions are.

There are some species of gar (cant think exactly which ones ATM) that may be possible, but I still wouldn't reccomend it...not after seeing full grown gar at the aquarium.

^_^

the tank would be 6' long either way and there are two differn't 100 gallons: 72 x 24 x 13//72 x 18 x 17 or the 135: 72 x 18 x 25

baracuda:
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1110 says 70 gallon minimum but i'd be going with a 100 or 135 gallon aquarium, probably 135 for a baracuda or 100 if i go with a gar
http://fish.mongabay.com/acestrorhynchus.htm
most other sites for the barracuda say minimum is anywhere from 55-135 gallons

gar:
needlesnose- http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1897
slant nose- http://fish.mongabay.com/species/Ctenolucius_hujeta_hujeta.html

i'm leaning towards a 100gallon and either the slant or needle nose gar.

live food would be no problem at all as i have a stream PACKED full of minnows within a mile of my house.

I only know of one Baracuda it is a large 4ft marine fish. Its teeth will rip flesh to pieces are we talking about the same fish.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

no keith were not talking about greater barracudas, trust me I know because I catch them. we're talking about the smaller fresh water cuda which has no links to a salt water cuda.

ya, i would never keep a marine cuda in a 135 gallon tank.

someday i wish i could keep some real 4ft cuda's in a tank, perhaps a 2,500 gallon outside tank someday......perhaps i will become one of those monster fishkeepers.

anyway which would you say i should go with, the cudas or the gars?

ya, i could go down to the canal, catch a crappie, carp or catfish and just throw er in there......either that or let go of a bunch of minows.

but now back to the tank at hand.

can gar or cudas be with live plants?

Ctenolucius hujeta is a type of freshwater barracuda that can grow up to about 27" but according to the literature i have read rarely reaches over 10" in an aquarium, so it could be possible to keep this type in a tank that size.

I also catch them in tropical Aust. Great fun keeping away from those razor teeth.

african fin eatting characin one of the fresh water baracudas.

i bleive that all true gars will get to big. rocket gars like fresh water baracudas are smaller.

The needle fish is probably the smallest but it does better in brackish water.

you mean needlenose gar? or is there some other needlenose that looks like its a gar but is smaller?

anyway, if my idea of a gar or cuda doesn't work out i think i might go with some stuff like a jack dempesey or some green severums or blue acaras.....

well idk about having that big of a tank anymore.......but i do think i'm going to be buying a larger corner tank.
its between the 42?, 54 or 92 gallon tank. If i get the 42 gallon i'm going to put a green severum in it, if i get a 54, it'll be a jack dempsey, if its the 92 i'm thinking either both the severum and JD or one of them and some bala sharks.

Please bear in mind that with corner tanks, even thought the volume and surface area may be rather large, due to their unusual shap they offer a lot less swimming space/territory for large/aggressive fish.

with a larger fish, i think they actually have more swimming space in a 54 gallon tank then in a 75, the only fish imo that don't really get along with a corner tank that good are the bottom feeders, or long fish such as the gar.
