Anyone ever get one of the Stingray stands, I bought the 20 x 12 and hope it's decent quality.
Thanks

I haven't dealt with this brand personally, but if the stand is anything like similar looking models it will be pretty sturdy. It looks like it will hold an aquarium well enough. I would be more worried about the stand tipping over (due to the small footprint) rather than malfunctioning.

One problem that I do see is that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of storage space, even if the center area has a cabinet. Hopefully you have another place to keep your aquarium knicknacks.

Yeah, I definately realized that storage would be an issue, but my other tanks stand (29gal) that I built myself is cavernous. Other than tying up some wiring it should be fine for it's intended purpose. I just didn't want to have to build another one, the one I did build myself is very nice: 2x4 frame, simpson strongties, top and bottom shelf from 1/2" Birch plywood, Clad all the way around in 1x4 machined pine. Tank was fitted and locked into stand with small strips of machined pine. Lets put it this way I can level the tank without removing any water. Just a prybar and cedar wedges. It would support a small car.

Wow, that sounds pretty nice. Way better than my cheapo iron tank stands. They function but the style is missing.

Well don't let anyone fool you, building your own had definate drawbacks. 1st issue is finding somewhat dimensionally correct lumber. Even the so-called premium building lumber is a joke (then again I work for a steel framing manufacturer, so I'm a little partial). I wish I had had some of the steel framing members that were heavy enough. Now that would have been cool. Building your own is really rewarding, experimentation is part of the process. All you need is a circular saw, power miter saw and a drill. If you compare the price of really nice stands you can make out building your own (so long as you have the tools), but those of us on a budget without tools are pretty much lost.

Hi,
To that list of tools, I would add a jointer and a
planer.

Power tools are wonderful, and I would not want to take on the task of building much of anything without them, but they are not absolutely necessary. Remember, they have been available for a lot less time than they weren't.

A true craftsman (I'm not claiming to be one of them) could build the most intricate of cabinets with just hand tools.

Your right old-timer. I admit I am not a craftsman in any stretch of the imagination.

The Stingray stand actually turned out to be nicely built for the price. Stable and level with a flat top. Not to bad at all. Good alternative to a metal stand for about the same cost
