OK, I really like this guy.... he has personality!
I am thinking I am gonna put him in the 10G by himself with a nice stone cave structure I made. What's the consensus on keeping him by himself????

Back several months I purchased 3 CAE's for my 55 gal tank.
I was told I made a HUGE mistake and blah blah.
Well, I also like my CAE's and they are entertaining to watch, they dont fight or bug my other fish and they keep my tank totally free of algea. Maybe I was lucky?
Anways, I see nothing wrong with having your CAE in a tank with other fish or alone. I do think they are somewhat social fish as mine like to swim with the others and play.

I'd have to say that would be a pretty unique species tank. Given the right layout of the tank it could be interesting, I am not sure a lot of people have tried CAE only tanks you could be making history! I don't know a whole lot about CAE's but maybe if you got him some more CAE friends(being that they are social with their own species) then he would be a lot more comfortable in his own tank. Good luck and maybe post some pics when you have this tank set up

I to am one of those who like CAE's your right they do have personality. Downside is with other fish when they get bigger they tend to munch on the fish and not the algae. Since you aren't putting in other fish you'll be fine for a while.

Ok now for the bad news. A single one will outgrow the 10 gallon in six months to a year. Your putting three in there so I think in 6 to 9 months you will have to get them a bigger tank. Other than that you should be fine. Oh and you might want to add in at least 2 caves That way they have some choice about where they like.

i keep a golden cae with my african cichlids and he has quite the personality. he looks at me whenever i go near the tank as though hes thinking "hey, wha you lookin at?!?". he is about 3-4" and doesnt seem to be agressive at all but he never gets picked on.

a funny thing ive noticed is that a pet store near me has them in coldwater tanks with goldfish. id think theyd suck the goldfishes thick slime coating off. the guy who runs it is nice and knows alot about fish, which leads me to the question, can they be kept in coldwater tanks/ponds? cause if mine ever reaches its potential size of 10" (which i highly doubt will happen) and gets agressive and too big for the tank i could just stick it in my pond.

I would never trust a CAE especially as they get older and bigger, and here lies your problem it would out grow that tank within 12 months or not long after.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

This is the text from my post in the Cichlid Central forum.
I have paired a Blue Ice Zebra Pseudotropheus with a 7" CAE in a 20 gallon tank.... they will be the only two occupants.... There are 3 caves, and two distinct areas of the tank.... what do you all think of this pairing. I chose the cichlid because I thought it would be the one fish that would be able to co-exist with the CAE.

So, for better or worse, or until my 14 day PetSmart guarantee runs out...... this is it. Only the first day, but they seem ok. The Cichlid stays in the middle zone, the CAE hides under the rock ledge, and if the Cichlid gets too close, the CAE chases him off and retreats back to the cave.
Input?
