For larger tanks, say 55g and above, what is better canister or power filters? Furthermore, what brand/models are best?

depending on what your stocking HOB is the best for 55g but from 60-125 a canister canister cant be beat. unless you want to spend lots of money

This question has been addressed several times and it nearly always points to Eheim Canister.
Reasons, quality, reliability, and excellent service back up.
They do have a canister for a 65US Gall Pump output US 116 GPH

But there always seems the one problem the $$$ naturally if you want quality you must be prepared to pay for it.

I can honestly can say it is the best filter I have ever used in 40 years.

Have a look slowly through some forums and I would be supprised if you could come across one complaint about a Eheim. That can not be said for several other well known brands. One brand looks exactly like a Eheim and that is exactly where it stops. A very poor cheap copy.

Here's a question for all the cannister fans.

The highest flow rate I have seen from a cannister was 425gph. That filter costs about $150. For $21 I can get a Penguin 330 power filter that flows at 330gph.
So what makes cannister filters so good?

keith, i see you use a 2026 Pro. Is that a Pro II series? Are the only advantages of the pro series Ehiems over the classic series the push2prime, filter maintenance indicator, and higher GPH? I found a classic 2215(w/media) for around $100US while the 2026 Pro II(w/media) is about $165US. Is the Pro II series worth the additional $65? Also the Ecco Comfort model 2236 w/media goes for around $90US. What advantages does it offer? I really dont see any. Right now i'm leaning toward the 2026 Pro II. What do you think?

I do not know the Penguin 330 power filter that flows at 330gph and therefore I cannot comment, but what I do know that Eheim is considered the best canister on the market today, also it is possibly the most expensive, because of the quality in all the manufacturing parts.

Desdinova.
Yes I have the Professional 11
I believe there are several differences, not having seen the other models I am not sure exactly what they are.

There are some added bits and pieces that came with my package. The adjustable corners for the inlet and outlet connections (see photo)(that styrene is only there for the photo),and an adjustable outlet (see photo). Mine has baskets for the substrate as well.

There is a maintainance indiciator which is a little white float and where it is will tell you the condition of the filters and subbases.
A new auto Valve release with a safety latch.
Also a new impella cover, which is very easy to remove and clean.

To get more info contact WWW.eheim.com and ask them for your nearest distributor and they should be able to tell you where to get one at the best $$$ I saved a lot of $$$ doing this. I can say I possibly had the first of that model in Aust. I had it ordered before the local Aqu new it was coming into the country.

Finally it is a fully German made product.

All I had to buy was a Right Angle piece at the bottom of the outlet piece you can see (Grey)

Reason my outlet tubing runs along behind the tank. It is also very close to the top of the glass as I have insulation between tank and a exterenal brick wall.

They had one at the Aqu but it can also be purchased at a garden center which sells irrigation pieces.

It is not the standard Eheim piece. It all depends on your own situation.

All the other extras came with the packaging.

I still rercomend you contact Eheim direct as ther could be a totally different package to USA but I dought it.

Please let me know how you go.

yes, i will contact Eheim. i like german products, they seem to always be engineered better. that was a good thought on your part, running the water back into the tank like that. good job. hope you don't mind, but i'm going to steal your design.
