Hello, welcome to FishProfiles!

I am not aware of a species of catfish called the feathertailed catfish. However, Synodontis eupterus is often called the Featherfin Catfish, is that your fish? If so, a tank should be sizeable and have plenty of hiding places so that these catfish do not fight over prime places to rest.

Both species are common, and probably would be common down under as well. I'm not sure why you'd have trouble finding them at your local fish store.
