I've been feeding my fish once daily, about what they can eat in a minute or two. I feed them flakes. I jsut dashed out to the pet store (any excuse to head in there will do!) to get some bloodworms and shrimp pellets. Should I be feeding them less or more often?

There are 3 TB's in a 20 gal tank that's 14 days old at the time of this post.

I think that once or twice a day is enough, as long as you don't feed them much food that remains uneaten. Maybe you can feed the once daily the Flakes or Granules & every 3 days you can give them a Bloodworm/Shrimp treat.

jasonpisani is right, once or twice a day with a treat of a non dry food every now and then instead of the second feeding.
Until the tank is fully cycled it's generally better to be conservative and feed a little less than usual rather than a little more. Any uneaten food and excess waste (from feeding too much) will simply turn into ammonia then nitrIte and cause trouble with your levels.

Fish can go a week or more without feeding, they're not going to starve to death if you're feeding them just a bit every day .

it sounds like your feeding your tiger barbs right but i would suggest getting at least two more. also if you want to switch up there diet a bit you could buy stuff like krill and brine shrimp but still make sure that half there diet is flakes.

Any feeding program should be varied I would only feed once a day the exception being when I give them an extra feding (a non fish food).

This info could also be helpful to you.

FEEDING: WHEN, HOW AND HOW MUCH?
This information was supplied with the permission of Sera WWW.sera.de

If possible, feed you fish two to three times a day in small doses, just enough so that it can be eaten within 2-5minutes.
Uneaten food sinks to the bottom, decomposes and pollutes the water. Spread the food evenly over the tank surface. By doing this all the fish have a good chance of getting some without difficulty.

Use a measuring spoon at all times this assures the same portions are given at all times. This avoids overfeeding, which causes pollution.

Many buy under the old formula “a one litre container once a year”. They have convinced themselves they are doing the correct thing providing all the nutritional requirements for their fish. By doing this, their diet becomes extremely unbalanced even if the food is of the highest quality. By constantly opening and closing the container the food is exposed to the air thus destroying all the vitamins and precious nutrients.

Fish should consume a container of food within a maximum of four months. This prevents all the problems of food losing all of its good qualities. Buy only in smaller qualities and as many varieties as possible in doing this you can vary the food each day, and still keep up the high quality of the fish food.

The larger containers are excellent for people who either are breeders or have multiple tanks. Here again it is recommended to use a wide variety of foods.
