linnie Fingerling Posts: 16 Kudos: 9 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-Aug-2008 | Well things seem to be going good but I have had so many non fish owners telling me so much that I thought I better get advice from you guys Is theere a prefered time for feeding and should you allow them time after feeding to move around or can you turn the light off for bedtime?? At the moment we are feeding in the morning a mixture of flakes and sinking pellets. Then in the evening about 8pm we again feed them same but with bloodworm as well. How long is it ok to keep the light on in the tank per day??? Thanks |

If you don't have live plants you may want less light time. Live plants generally like 12+ As for feeding. Fish can find food in the dark, some better than others. I'd suggest a little less food in the evenings, maybe feed earlier in the afternoon instead. But that's just me. I don't like eating right before bed either! ^_^ |

If you have fish that are active in the daytime it will be best to feed during the day. If you have nocturnal fish that hide during the day and are active at night, you'll want to feed them when the lights are out. If you have both, you can do two feedings, with foods appropriate for the fish you are feeding at a certain time (for example if your nocturnal fish are bottom-dwellers, you'd feed sinking pellets when lights are out and other foods like flake during the day). You can get a light timer at any hardware store, and it will be one of the cheapest but most useful pieces of equipment you will have for your aquarium. They're usually under $5 unless you want a fancy digital or lighted one. ><> |

I feed twice a day, once while the lights are on for my diurnal fish and once right after the lights go off and my nocturnal fish are swimming about. There is not a preferred feeding time, but if you feed too soon before turning off the lights, diurnal fish may not be able to find all the food; if you have no nocturnal fish then the food is wasted. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I also never feed on the day that I do a water change. Lighting is on by a timers 7am-8pm I have twin light units one plant tube & one daylight tube. With the Frozen blood worms they get them three times a week with the sinking algae tabs, the other days it is a mix of flakes and sinking Algae pellets.
