I'm planning a 75g African Cichlid tank. Any ideas on heaters (brands and wattage).

The information I have is 60-90 gal 300W

I personaly woud use two 300w.

I have always used two heaters and never a problem.
Always buy a good quality brand name and be on the safe side.

General rule given is to have 5 watts per gallon of water....with a 75 gallon that'll make around 375 watts of heat....This of course depends on the room temperature as well. Submersible heaters IMO are a must, multiple heaters will insure more even heating, and that if one breaks that the others will be able to pick up the slack.

I would also recommend using two heaters. Biggest thing though, like Keith said, is make sure you buy a brand name heater. Going cheap on the heater is a recipe for disaster.

Let's see, I've had excellent experiences with both Rena-cal and Visitherm heaters.

i personally would use 2 200w heaters as well. if you go for quality, i would consider jagar heaters.......all the salties use them so they must be good i personally use via aqua / aqua one heaters (same heater, just changed brand name ) cause i can get them at a really good price and i've had better experiances with them than with the visitherm, altho visitherm has a good rep.

when you do get your heaters, place them at opposite ends of the tank for better heat distrobution, and of course i don't have to remind you about placeing them infront of the filter putlet of possible........do i?

In my 75 gallon I have a single Ebo-Jager 250 watt heater and it does the job fine. Room temp. is usually between 68 and 74F.

I was going to do the pair of 200 watt heaters, but the helpful person at the LFS pointed out that the 250W was only a couple of dollars more than a 200. She suggested trying one and if it couldn't do the job, to get another one. I've been using just a 250W and it has managed just fine, even with the weather and the house getting colder. So, I suspect you could get by with a 250. That said, having two heaters is certainly an insurance policy if one breaks down. The advantage with a 75 gallon, though, is that the large water volume gives you plenty of time to notice and correct a problem. And I would concur with the recommendation of Ebo Jager heaters. When you open up the box, the heater just exudes quality. I personally wouldn't go with any other brand.
