So, I have 4 adults and 5 baby Platys in a 75 gallon right now and I just added 9 black neons and 2 otos (I've had some algae growing for a few months now) and I don't want a mini cycle to start is there any extra little things I can do to maybe help that from happening?? Thanks

Well thats a very large tank and the amount of fish you added shouldn't cause a noticable mini-cycle. Just keep up with the water changes and you should be fine.

There are several products that you can use Melafix is recommended when introducing new fish into a tank. Sera have a product called Bio Starter this introduces a new good bacteria into your filtration system and it is recommended to use it at every water change as well.

Mia,

Is your tank planted?

If so, and if there are more than just a few plants in there, then I would not worry about it. As Ethan already said, your tank is pretty large and your bio-load is rather small.

If not, then I would follow Keith’s advice, just to be on the safe side.

In addition, are planning on upping the number of your Otos at some point later? They are more relaxed when the number of their shoal is increased.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

Your wee beasties can double the colony size in less than 2 days, assuming there is food (ammonia and nitrites) and a place to live (media).

Melafix for introducing fish Well it can't really hurt I suppose, but it won't really do anything for preventing minicycles as it hasn't got the bacteria that's needed for that.
Cycle or biospira are both available in the states, I assume that biospira is available in canada, I know cycle is.

Considering how low the stocking was before you added fish, I'm concerned that the tank was even fully cycled to begin with. Keep an eye on your water quality for the next few weeks and I wouldnt suggest adding anything more for 2-3 weeks @least. Additional fry may of course be unavoidable .

The label from Melafix States "Use when introducing new fish to the aqurium"

I bought some when I could not get any "Stress Coat"

Yes I realize that the label says that However it's not to prevent minicycle.

Melafix has mild antibacterial/antifungal properties. It does not have active bacteria nor does it do a thing to prevent minicyle.

Just felt that needed to be made clear in case others were confused and thought they could use melafix to prevent a minicycle..
