I am also sorry to hear about your loss. A few questions size of tank, any other fish in the tank, how often and what percentage of water change do you do,also do you feed on the same day as the water changes.

Yes Neons can be touchey I did say "Can be" How long have you had the Neons?

With the chunks out and eye damage are the Neons still alive or dead when you notice this?

Sorry to ask so many questions but it is possibly the only way to help solve your problem.

sorry to hear about your neons. i had the same problem once upon a time when I kept neons with a red zebra + tiger barbs. I was much more of a beginner than i am now and stupidly put them together. However, when neons (and sometimes parts of the barbs) started disappearing or losing their head etc, I put it down to the zebra when it really had little to do with the zebra.

You've probably heard that neons are extremely sensitive to water fluxuations, so they pretty much kark it whenever you do even tiny little changes to the water (sometimes the water could even change on its own due to rotting matter etc). If you keep other carnivore/omnivore fish in the same tank that wouldn't usually bother the neons, you can pretty much bet that the other fish will see the neon corpse as a free and easy feed.

I now keep clown loaches and neons together and they completely ignore each other, but when the CL's do come near the neons, the neons quickly get out of their way. If a neon was not to get out of their way (eg. a dead neon), they would be eaten. I have found that the CL's get rid of the dead neons for me so I don't have to fish them out with a net! Very practical animals! But they will only ever eat the dead ones. In the 18 months that I've had them, they have only ever eaten dead ones. I have now set up quite a healthy aquarium though and I haven't lost a neon in about 6 months.

But I have to admit that I have only ever seen my CL's eat one dead neon. After I saw this, I put all the other neon disappearances down to the same cause.

Is your tank new at all? Are the neons new to the tank? Have you done something to the water that would aggrivate the neons health? Any other info you can provide? Have you recently changed the food for your betta? Perhaps he doesn't like it prefers fried neon. I would suggest that you pay more attention to the health of the neons rather than the actions of the betta. Good luck and get back to us with the details as i'd like to know what the outcome is.
