New 10G Tank and Dwarf Gourami | |
xiaan Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 2 Votes: 1 Registered: 29-Aug-2007 | I have just setup my 10G tank and have placed 5 live plants in it. I am now looking to add fish to the tank. I would like to eventually have one or two Dwarf Gourami but to start out I would like to get a small school of fish. I was wondering what would be a good fish to go with the Gourami? and how many should I get? |

Hatchets im afraid will need a rather larger tank, and are schoolers so sadly thats a no-no Dwarf Gourami's would be a great fish to have! Just be aware that two males will fight, and a pair of male/female should be ok, but not be. Other good additoins may be a school of small tetras, Gupies or Platies. If you need any help just ask . I don't really know ur prefs so i can't help to much. :/ Hope this helps Teh Ham |

A nice small fish that is easy to find is the white cloud mountain minnow, or zebra danios. Getting another dwarf gourami would be a bad idea since they're territorial with other males, and females are incredibly hard to find except online. If this is your first fish tank though, you might be better off staying with just the dwarf for now. How long have you had the tank set up? The pottery that growls! |

xiaan Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 2 Votes: 1 Registered: 29-Aug-2007 | How about this for a makeup for my 10G tank? 2 Dwarf Gourami Male/Female 1-2 Kuhli Loach (any other recommendations for a cool bottom feeder) ~6 small schooling fish Is this too much for my tank? For schooling fish I was thinking eather Black Widows, Black Phantoms, Harlequins, Cherry Barbs or White Clouds. My GF has Gupies and Platies so I am looking for something a little different. |

What you have to consider is the 10g is not actually 10g reason there is the substrate and any thing else in the tank. My 40lt+ Betta tank is actually 32lt to get that figure after I added the Substrate, DW, rocks, Filter and Heater I measured the water as I added it. 5 plants is not very many for a small tank the more live plants the better also you must have a good filter and do at least a 30-40% weekly water change. I always recommend Cardinal Tetras but I think they prefer to be in larger groups. You must consider the size you choose at their adult size, and possibly have a limit of 4-5 small fish. xiaan Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 2 Votes: 1 Registered: 29-Aug-2007 | My current setup has an Aqua Clear Mini(20), heater, small air pump and bubbler and Perfect-A-Light 20" hood with a fluorescent light. I got most of the setup from my sister who had a tank a few years ago excpt for the heater witch comes from my old tank (I had a 20G and my mother gave it away). My sister also gave me a small 2G tank witch I am thinking of setting up with a beta and giving it to my GF for her classroom. I also just got a good test kit so I can start testing the water. my tank as of yesterday morning pH of 7.8, 0.2 Ammonia, 0 NO2 and 0 NO3 As for the plants I got 5 bunches of plants (actually about 20 or so plants) In the tank I have a Amazon sword plant two different Bacopa and I think a Elodea (also a couple of hitch hiking snails from the plants). I am thinking about adding a bunch of Corkscrew Val to the tank. For fish I like Zebra Danios but fear a school of them would outgrow the tank. So I am probably going with White clouds for now. When should I start adding fish? I will probably start with 2-3 white clouds and when the tank is stable add 2 more white clouds the Kuhli Loach and Dwarf Gourami one male first. Then eventuraly if I can find one a female Dwarf Gourami. |

Add the Val first. See if you can get a small Clown Loach from your LFS and return it in about two months time. He will clean the tank of the snails and their eggs easly. Then start adding the new fish slowly. Do your weekly water change then add them the next day. Also use Melafix as recommened. I would add the Gourami pair together. With the filtration I would clean it weekly this will help to eleminate water problems. I know it may not seem necessary but is well worth the extra effort. As soon as he got bigger I transfered him to the 5ft tank. With the good start he grew very quickly for the first year then slowed down as they do. xiaan Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 2 Votes: 1 Registered: 29-Aug-2007 | Well Last night I went to the LFS and got the Val I also decided to get 4 white clouds and added them to my tank last night and they seem to be doing quite well for now. I will be doing daily water changes and monitoring the Ammonia and NO2 levels in the tank. I also checked and my LFS do carry both male and female Dwarf Gourami. So after the tank becomes stable I will probably be adding both to the tank. |

However they are also very VERY active fish and should be in a 20 gallon minimum. You'd be putting a lot of pressure on the living conditions of a 10gallon putting 2 dwarf gourami and the WCMM. 10's are very unstable and having that ammout of livestock is just asking for trouble down the road. ^_^ |

divertran Fish Addict Posts: 784 Kudos: 469 Votes: 165 Registered: 14-Nov-2004 | Hi and welcome to FP. to asking for advice. To start off, as Babel mentioned a ten gal is a very unstable tank and the parameters can and often do spike very, very easily! I cannot stress this enough. Many species can be very sensitive to maladies caused by poor water conditions, and IMO Dwarf Gouramis are high on that list. Even with very regular maintenance. Mine had all sorts of problems, even tho they were the only inhabitants and with a rigorous maintenance schedule. Once I got them healthy they thrived when I put em in the 29. For such a small tank I'd reccomend a nice school of about 7 cards or even about 7 harlies and perhaps a pair of ottos after several months. White clouds also should be in something bigger. Same for the Khulies. Your equipment seems fine, the AC filter is very good for a ten, I've got 2 of them. Good luck. |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | I do not suggest white clouds or danios for a 10g. They are too active and do best in a 20g or more. Remember schooling fish do best with 6minimum and both those fish are schoolers. Hatchets would actually have been the better choice but I don't really suggest any schooling fish for a 10g. It gets crowded far too quickly. Your better off just doing the kuhlis, dwarf gouramis, and maybe some other nonschooler like a couple livebearers. Neons or cardinals are a possibility considering their small size but if doing that I either wouldn't have added the kuhlis or would stick with one gourami. |
