New 5G on the way need ideas.... | |
ashes Hobbyist Posts: 75 Kudos: 45 Votes: 0 Registered: 05-Oct-2005 | Hi I am getting a nice little 5G from bigalsonline.com (who is having free shipping till monday 12/5/05 if anyone is interested)[link=http://bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xm thats the link to the tank. It will be planted with small live plants, and have natural looking small fish gravel. What I was thinking of doing is making it a small tetra tank but I don't know how many I can fit in the tank or what is the best kind. So any sugestions on kinds of tetras and small plants would be great thanks. |

Are you going to use CO2 or any fertilizers, and what kind of what wattage lighting will be on the tank? Some plants are more demanding than others. As for tetras, there are few I would recommend for a tank that small. I'd go with a species that doesn't get any larger than three cm (one inch) in length. Neon tetras, lemons, and flame tetras (for example) all fit the bill, but each is still a different type of fish. Lemon tetras seem to me to be the hardiest of the three, then flames, then the neons. I advise doing research on any candidates, both to see which ones you like the best, and which may be the most suitable. In a five gallon fish tank, you'll want a species that is very hardy in regard to water quality. As for numbers, six or seven small tetras and nothing else would be my recommendation. |

I would limit to three Cardinal Tetras and 1 or 2 Ottos or 1-2 khuli loaches It will depend on the type of lighting and filtration also the experience you have as I have stated before the smaller the tank the more difficult it can become as there is very little room for any errors. As mentioned, there are a few tetra choices available. There are a number of small rasboras; I usually recommend [link=this link]http://www.azgardens.com/schooling_fish.php" style="COLOR: #FFCCCC[/link] to see pictures and get info on them. A group of male Endler's, a pair of cherry barbs, or sparkling gouramis are also options. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
