New Tank what can go wrong? | |
Dholden007 Fingerling Posts: 25 Kudos: 10 Votes: 7 Registered: 12-Aug-2006 | I am very paranoid, when I leave my apartment in the morning I check everything at least 3 times, making sure I didn't leave anything on. However now with the new tank I am leaving on the heater, filter, the light and the airpump. Is that OK, I mean could anything go wrong. I am especially worried about the heater and filter. I dont want to come home one day and find the apartment flooded. Could anything like that happen???? Also can I turn the light and the airpump off, how long can these be left off for daily. Thanks for your help. |

If it's a cannister, the worse that could happen would be that the inlet pipe somehow found its way loose of the filter and water syphoned itself out onto your floor, however the water would stop obviously when it reaches the bottom level of the inlet pipe. TBH there are many things that could go wrong, however the likelyhood of any of these happening is remote to say the least. Edit: yes you can turn the airpump and light off, however it is not recomended, fish do best in a naturalistic environment and there's nothing naturalistic about having 2 sunrises and 2 sunsets a day |

They are made to be left on! Yes, sometimes they do malfunction but that's why you check them periodically when you are home. There is nothing to worry about though! Look at it this way, you don't worry about a lightbulb going out in your kitchen! There is the same chance of anything horrible happening to your fishtank if it's setup correctly. I would suggest putting your tank lights on a timer however. Have a worryfree day! -Josh |

I actually also wanted to know how high up must you fill the tank with water. About how many inches (or cm) from the top for a 27 gallon hexagon? I left about 3 inches. Also I have 3 airstones (which may be too many)and the currents seem strong and a little water mist comes out and hits the flo-light. Is that dangerous in any way???? I adjust the air pressure in the gange valve and the air pump but still some water hits the lamp. |

To answer the water from the top this must be answered. My filters and heaters are only turned off for the weekly or monthly cleaning. The air stones are running 24/7 the lights are controlled by timers. Aquariums are a very relaxing past time but if you start worring about every little thing it will become a big night mare. Dont worry if you are not sure ask which you are doing now that is the best advice I can give you. If we go away for a few days I just feed them as normal and feed again when I come home and never a problem. If the power does go off it all starts off again only the timer could be out I just reset it and that is all I do. Also on a 27-gallon hexagon tank, should the water be filled all the way to the lip? In other words, should the water line be seen at all from the outside? Thanks |

keithgh *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 | I have the timers set for about 7.30 am and they go of 11hrs later. As far as water level both tanks are different. The 5ft is filled to just below the glass which supports the 1/4 ins glass top. The Betta tank has a plastic strip which suports the glass and it is filled to the bottom of that which means I can not see the water level. I hop this helps if not PM me.
