New tanks - yay can't wait | |
T'Ark'An'Ni Ak'Kan Enthusiast Posts: 219 Kudos: 119 Votes: 34 Registered: 26-Dec-2002 | Hello there m'dears, I'm starting up a few new tanks - finally have the room again! Below is my possible stocking lists for your perusal and comment. 2x2x2 Coldwater tank - lots of elodea, with a shubukin (should do for the meantime, until I can build a nice pond outside?) 2x1x1 Tropical tank - 15 Neon Tetras - 4 Kuhli Loaches (should I get more? As in, would they be happier in a larger group?) - lots more elodea, perhaps some Java Moss 4x2x2 Tropical tank - 2 Clown Loaches (come with the tank - they're a good 12-14cm in size, is it too late to add more as they prefer company?) - 1 3-Spot Gourami - 15 Green Tiger Barbs - 1 Black Ghost Knife Fish - 10 Zebra Danios - 8 Albino Corydoras (hopefully Corydoras plateus) - You guessed it, lots more elodea Thanks, Alex |

I know it was declared noxious in NSW fairly recently, so that puts it in the same category as caboba, water hyacinth and salvinia in that you can get fairly substantial fines for being caught with it. It might be worth checking with your state DPI, as I know this applies to NSW and WA, but am unsure of the status of other states. Danios are cheap enough to be snacks if you want. Its not like fishfood is made of wholesome vegetarian goodness - there's dead fish in that too. If you are happy for them to slowly go walkies as the BGK grows up, then no dramas I've used bettas as not-really-food-but-not-sad-if-you-get-eatens before, so I can't really complain. Just don't go wasting the pinks, blues or marbled ones, mmkay? |

To be honest, I really don't like any of the 'fancy' varieties of the Zebra Danios - IMHO the original is the best in this case. How do you think my stocking levels are? I've run the numbers, and it seems okay - perhaps I could fit in some more? And don't worry, the tanks will be over-filtered as per the usual. Cheers, Alex |

Yep the knife fish will eat those tiny Danios and any other smaller fish it can fit into it's mouth. Be sure to have a cave somewhere in the tank so he can sleep during the day. |

The only other thing I would go for are Cardinal Tetras over the Neons as they are a stronger fish and less e to many Neon problems. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Even Java Moss died on me. Callatya, I just checked today - thank god, Elodea is still okay in Qld. keithgh, mmm tasty snacks. My main reason - Neons = $1.75 each whereas Cardinals = $5.60 each here. Thanks, Alex |
