Am planning to keep Discus and was searching through the site for any compatible species to keep with. Found none. My LFS is suggesting Kissing Gouramis. Im not sure. Please advice.

rummynoses and rams seem to be the best candidates for a discus tank as they can live in "hot house" conditions, althogh there are plenty of discus-compatible fish. this article might be of some use- http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/show_article.php?article_id=259

about the kissing gouramis- i wouldnt advise it. they can get somewhat aggressive, not to mention large, so theyd have the discus hiding all day. pearl gouramis would be much better discus tankmates- theyre peaceful and do fine in "hot-house" conditions

i wouldnt necissarily not get tankmates as it will make the discus less timid when theres a school of small tetras swimming around

So what is the recommended tank size for discus? And which tetras seem to do better with them? Would cardinals be good or are there other tetras that do better? Black neons (black goes with everything), black skirts?

a good minimum for discus would be 75g, which can hold up to 3 (possibly 4). cardinals and black neons should be fine with discus, although black skirts are one of the more aggressive tetras, and wouldnt hesitate to nip at a discus. if you read the article, it says avoid "flat-bodied" tetras, which the black skirt happens to be.

Good point about the kissing gouramis. My stepdad has one, it really antagonized the silver dollars and bugged the angels on occasion too. As bad luck would have it, the parentals had a 4 day power outage last week. All their fish were lost in the 120 EXCEPT the darn kissing gourami (I hate that fish), and a nice opaline that never bothered any other fish. Good news is I'm already holding 6 gold pearscale angelfish for them

Don't be so quick to say no tankmates, when a little research easily shows several fish will get along with them, adding smaller fish will make them feel safer. Otos would be a nice addition OR there is also a cory species or two from south america, and rummynoses would be a colorful addition. Before adding otos, is the tank matured or newly setup ? Some green algae is needed for otos.

Quarante new fish for at least 2 weeks before adding to the discus tank (and if the tank were mine, I'd go a month or longer)

Are your discus wildcaught or domestic bred ?

Damossman has a good point with the rummynoses. a large school of them would look amazing with discus. and like Damossman said QUARANTINE THEM! you wouldnt want to pass any diseases onto your priceless discus
