I asked my girlfriend if we changed the water because it was very dirty... I didn't know that soap was awful for the poor guppies and then refilled the tank withouth dechlorinator... ]

I have done multiple 100% water changes, fish fights because not researching compatibilities before purchasing, many times I overpopulated the 10g and even my first fishes where 6, one goldfish and others but the tank was like 1.5 gallons... I never could cyclye it... what was that, then?

Then I studied about everything... The goldfish was saved from diseased, and lived about 3.5 years. It was WONDERFUL and was more complimented than the rest of the fishes I've ever had...

The most precious advice for me was "Take the hand as much as possible from the tank!!!!"

This isn't fish related, but still an aquatic mistake. If you have a funny feeling that your turtle is about to bite you, he probably is. Remember kids, knowing is half the battle

When I was little, some 30 or so years ago, we had what I think was a 20 gal tank which was home to some kissing fish, a pair of angels, an algae eater, some guppies (I think) and maybe a few tetras. We never did gravel vacuum, or even knew what that was. but we would every few months remove all fish into a gallon pickle jar and completely tear down the tank washin all gravel and decorations, filling the tank up with new water and after letting the water settle and warm up, plop the fish back in.

Driving across town with two tinfoil barbs in a five gallon bucket on a summer day. The bucket is in the back of my van. I turn the stereo on and hear a splash. I am amazed to find a silver fish flopping around on the dashboard and front seat with me. Luckily I was able to pull over and get him off the carpet with my wet hands. The poor little guy is still alive and well, this happened like two years ago. Lucky he didn't jump out the window!

when i was younger my neighbours left us in charge of feeding their goldfish while they wr on holiday. being the competative little brats my brother and i were, we started arguing over which golfish was bigger and what better way to settle an argument then to take the fish out for a official measurment?!?!?

so we caught them all (with our hands) and got out a ruler. as we were doing this mum calls us for dinner and lets just say we didnt to feed the fish anymore for the rest of the holiday i wouldv hated to be in my parents shoes to explain that to our neighbours when they got back!

Cleaned ALL the filter media at once, which sparked a 3 month string of bad luck.

my first fish when i was about 7 was a goldfish , and he lived 15 years, but when i tried tropicals for the first time at about age 10 i killed 6 tiger barbs through successive incidents. One died trapped between the internal filter and the glass wall (theres a tip for beginners- give em at least a one inch gap), i killed about another three by not knowing my water chemistry , doing water changes that were excessive, without water conditioner and cleaning out the filter weekly,so basically i had no functional biological filtration i dropped one onto the carpet when i was transferring it to a plastic tank during one of my then totally excessive cleanings. tripped over it in panic and crushed its head, and when i got my first test kit, i tested the water and found it to be lethal , and transferred the last remaining fish to the axolotl tank which was in great shape.oops. Munchies Sue me , i was 10 and people were all rubbish with fish back then )

Anyway I read about 40 books in a year about fish care totally out of guilt (trust me, that was heavy reading when youre 10) and sorted my life out ! Consequence - no more unexpected deaths even to the present day.

I even got over the pain of the childhood loss and bought another 6 green tiger barbs 4 years ago, thankfully i still have all of them and they are 3 times the size of my old ones, and do keep trying to breed, which is just as well cos otherwise i would have been forced to jumped off a cliff with the name DARLA tattooed on my head, Reading is goooood.lol.

My dad always used to keep lots of goldies, shubunkin, and koi and he always used to just say one phrase "tropicals are rubbish, what did you expect?" , now as an old man he comes and visits me , takes one look at my aquaria, and says stuff like - "how the hell do you manage to keep those" and " i wish i could get plants to grow like that".
Besides he managed to kill his koi with a dodgy batch of terramycin years ago.

Most satisfying , muhahaha.

I did a water change of 300 gallons on a 30 gallon tank. Damned Python should have known when to stop!

My silly thing was that I did't know what a gravel vac was so in order to clean the gravel I would stick my hand in there and stir it up so the filter could remove it.

On a very, very hot day my ex put ice in my son's betta bowl to help cool it down. At least the poor thing didn't suffer too long
