Hello

I know this is a smallish tank, but I'm wondering what peaceful community fish could go in a tank this size. Wondering if anyone could give me some ideas.

Thanking you.

Cheers

I would go with 3-4 male guppies and 3-4 cherry barbs.

Thanks Fish Guy

Would it also be okay to swap the 3-4 cherry barbs with 3-4 male platy?

Cheers

I really wouldn't recommend doing both but one or the other. IMO platies are a bit too large for that sized tank.

A nice male betta, a female betta or two although that doesn't always work; you might was to search the boards and do some research if you'd like to try that setup. And you could have an ADF with the betta.

Sparkling gouramis, Endler's, killies...and my personal favorite small tank setup: I have a 5.5g with a pair of N. brevis with lots of fry:

Since I'm really into them right now, and having observed their behavior for all of 4 days, I second the sparkling gourami, IF you throw in some floating plants. Leave some pennywort or duckweed or something floating at the surface for some cover, and I see no reason why you couldn't have a trio. They're smaller than bettas, they have just as much personality, they're FAR more tolerant of one another, and prettier IMO

Platies, too big. I have 2 in a 15, they are not fully grown, and still seem huge.
I would plant it, and put either
2 Cherry Barbs
OR
2/3 Sparkling Gourami
OR
2/3 Male Guppies
OR
1 Male Betta

Hope this helps

How do you feel about tetras? 3-4 bloodfins would go nice. Also, if you put some live plants in there, I would recomend an otocinclus (think I spelled it right). They are a great alternative to a pleco.

thanks jbe0404

I'll pass your suggestions on. The tank's not mine, but the owner currently has goldfish in it - which I know isn't suitable. I'm trying to give her some alternatives, so thanks for the suggstion. Do you think she has room for 6 tetra's, as I thought tetras needed to be in a school of 6?

Cheers

I've got 3 in a 10 gallon along with a few other small species. They are very happy and very colorful. I also heard that they should be in a school of six too but I gave it a shot and they are very happy.

The only tetras I would put in a 5.8g tank is neons or cardinals. And I am not even sure they would be ok in that size tank. She may be able to have 5-6 neons/cardinals in there. Get a second opinion though.

Small tanks crash easily so I would recommend only putting a male betta, 2-3 cherry barbs, or a pair of shelldwellers (like Theresa's).
It is good that you are giving her good advice and trying to help. A goldfish does not belong in a 5g tank. /:'

White Clouds may even be a better choice. They are smaller and like cooler temperatures so a heater would not be required. So maybe 5-6 white clouds.

White clouds are too active for a 5g tank. I have asked about them before, for my 5g and the answer was no.

Neons are not that active. I still wouldn't put them in that size tank though. They deserve more room IMO.

A male betta or shelldwellers are the best choices IMO.
