Having cycled our 55 the traditional way, I decided to try stress-zyme for the 10 gallon I have just set up. The tank has been running for 1 week, and the Stress-zyme has been in for 2 days, and the water parameters are:
Temp 79F
ammonia-0
N02-0
N03-0
PH 7.5
Inhabitants are 4 leopard Danios

Am I safe to assume that the tank is now cycled?
Thanks Again,
Dan

In my experience, products that claim to speed up the cycle don't really do anything at all. The only surefire way I've found of helping the process along is either transferring a filter or gravel from an established tank.

The fact that there is no nitrate concerns me. With fish in the tank, you should have readings for at least one waste compound. I'd check your test kit and see if it has expired.

It sounds to me like maybe your cycle hasnt even begun, with 0's across the board. If you haven't seen the ammonia count rise and fall, then the nitrite count rise and fall, then a low nitrate reading, you probably haven't cycled...

Keep watching, keep testing daily so that if and when changes occur, you don't miss them.

Also, are you testing with strips, at the LFS or with a liquid test kit?

If you're not using lisquids, I would strongly reccomend investing in a liquid test kit. The strips aren't always so accurate.

Good luck and welcome!

By reading that I see you have done a cycling previously and should know the procedure and how it works.
But with only being set up for one week there's no way your tank is even any where cycled.
The Stress Zyme will help to start of the good bacteria, it is not a miracle product but a product that assist in keeping the good bacteria alive in your tank.

I had no choice but buy Stress Zyme when I had the "nasty" recently causing a big mini cycle. The product I used previously which was to be kept refrigerated is no longer made. Stress Zyme is made by the same company in USA but does not have to be refrigerated.
It can be double dosed for the first time you use it then you must follow all the instruction as recommended.
It is a good bacteria that builds up in your filter and substrate. I also use it at every water change.
All I can say is it "does" work if not I would not have any fish left at all.
My problem was I could not change the water reason being all I would be doing in introducing more of the "nasties" into the tank that was killing all the good bacteria.
I would highly recommend this product to any one providing it is used corectly.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

ok then.... next trip to the city I'll be picking up a liquid test kit. I have one for ammonia, but strips for all else.
I am not assuming the tank is cycled, it did have an ammonia reading of .25 and a nitrate reading of 20 prior to adding the stress zyme, but now is reading 0's accross the board.
I guess I should have been more specific in asking my question: With Stress-zyme, will I still see an ammonia spike, and higher n02 or n03 numbers before it levels off to 0-ish again?
Thanks again,
Dan

Hi. Your cycle is just beginning. As was said before you could greatly speed things along by introducing a few handfuls of gravel from your existing tank, or some filter media. With or without the stress zyme, which is a fine product the cycle on your ten will take about 3-5 weeks to complete. Gravel or filter media from your established tank will introduce actual living bacteria which may shorten that.
A good liquid test kit is much more accurate then test strips.

I just began cycling a new 10g last nite. I added a few netfulls of gravel from my 20g and 5 g of change out water from the 20g, along with a rock that had been in the 20g. Once I get a new HOB filter,I will use some media from that 20g filter in my new one.

I'll let you know how long it takes to cycle. I am cycling without fish this time.

Keep us posted!

I am hesitant to use anything from my 55 given that we just had ick, and I am worried about cross contamination.... or am I just paranoid?

No, not paranoid. Good common sense is what I'd call that
