Tiny tank suggestions | |
dancin_hippo Small Fry Posts: 11 Kudos: 8 Votes: 1 Registered: 07-Apr-2005 | Hi All, We have a small fish tank at home (only 40cm wide, 10cm deep, 20cm high). In the past we've kept a male Siamese Fighter who was quite happy for almost two years, but since he's died I'd like to get a different type of fish. Does anyone know of a different breed, single or maybe a school of fish that would be happy in such a small tank? Thanks, Keith. |

They only get about 3/4 in. and have great color. Here where I got mine and some info on them:http://www.petsolutions.com/Default.aspx?ItemID=57040 Also try Micro-cory I got mine at LFS and that the name the called them not sure if that their real name. They only get about 3/4 in as well. Djrichie "Don't Panic" Djrichie "So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish" Douglas Adams |

Corys are schooling fish that need a group of 6 or more. They would need at least 10 gallons for a proper group. I also wouldnt recommend a dwarf puffer. These fish should have at least 5 gallons of space per puffer. A male or female betta. A pair of pencilfish. Some shrimps. A bumblebee goby. Mosquitofish. Trio of white clouds. Any of these would work in 2g. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

djrichie Big Fish Rough but Honest [img]htt Posts: 366 Kudos: 309 Votes: 45 Registered: 29-Jan-2007 | I don't know guys? With a tank that small and from pass posting discussing the aggressiveness of puffers. Being that they will kill every other fish in a tank. I don't know about that but others have more experience with them that, so I have excepted that as true. I figure that a fish that should not be kept with other fish, a couple of puffers that only gets 3/4 of an inch fully grown with java moss and/or one plant. Would be a match made in heaven. I know that we all love our fish and want to give the best environment possible and this enviroment would be fine. A small tank full of shrimp even cherry shrimp or bumble bee shrimp whats the point. It wouldn't hurt them, they have plenty of room and you could get a male/female couple. If you concern is water quality in tank that small you will have to WC at least 2x's a week. and what would that really be a cup or 2 of water you let set out over night. Maybe, your thinking is can't have enough fish for the puffer to be happy. From what I can see from mine they are not social to each other, except when I walk up to the tank and then they dance and play and say "hello where you been". My fish really don't talk , don't want you guys to think i completely off my rocker. I did the math it's a 2.1 us Gal tank. So, I have to disagree. I think a plant, some java moss and pair of pea puffer would be fine and look great, but that's just my opinion, ultimately it up to the keeper. If a heater and filter or even a light is what you need for a little 2 gal TANK than you can find them on the net. I know here in Miami a lot of people are going with mini tanks on their desk at work. (better work environment I guess) Which is increasing the demand on the micro fishes and pea puffers are on the top of list. So I agree to disagree, and I'm sorry about that because I respect everyone opinion and would never tell anyone its wrong. Bettas on the whole require very little care and there have been numerous accounts of "my friends betta never had his water cleaned and lived for 5 years" so on and so on. Corys especially the pygmies are going to be quite sensitive to water quality. Additionally unlike bettas they will need adequate oxygenation for the water as they are not only unable to breathe from the surface like a betta can but they also spend most of their time at the bottom where the water quality is the worst. I also disagree on the puffers, smallest I'd keep them in is a 5, they just need a little more room. They both could work, but I just don't think it's best for the fish. I think the best idea would be to go with the shrimp. Even something as common (and inexpensive !) as ghost shrimp are fun to watch. Mine loved peas and would always turn a lovely green color when they were fed . ^_^ |

reun Big Fish Posts: 332 Kudos: 216 Registered: 04-Nov-2005 | I dunno, most fish like puffers need alot of attention, and most likely need things like heaters, ect that most people do not have for their 2 gallon tanks. My vote is for another beta or shrimp, because there isn't much that can be happy in that tank...any tetras or rasboras that can fit in that tank need to be in schools... |
