this isnt a very big topic but just for anyone new setting up a tank make sure you have bought water treatment other handy things to have are :
1. plant food (to promote plant growth for a healthy looking tank)
2. disease treatments (at the begining of a tank fish can sometimes be vunerable to disease)
3.ph and nitrate testers (to keep your tank in check)

none of these are completely neccassery but they really are a great help

Dont feel bad I confuse myself too

Some might totally disagree with that statement but it is certainly good advice

disease treatments (at the begining of a tank fish can sometimes be vunerable to disease)

This is mainly caused by hurried and rush selections to get the tank FULL of fish "NOW" instead of waiting between new fish. Another very big problem is very bad advice give by some LSF or where the fish are sold and kept in very poor conditions.

Before some one jumps on me not all LFS are like this thank goodness but most will argee it does and will happen.
The best advice here is locate a good one in your area if you dont know of one ask here on FP stating the area you live or shop in.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Craig,

Albeit I find your post great in its intention, it lacks any detail that would actually help anybody (besides the nitrate test kit).

What kind of plant food are you suggesting?
What kind of disease treatment?
Why do you need a ph test kit, couldn't you get it tested at the LFS and from there on simply assume the result as your base ph?
Aren't there many other things that soneome should consider when starting a tank, like proper and slow stocking, proper equipment with heater and filter (and light), just to name a few?
