I am going to be setting up a larger tank in the near future i'm think of a 40-50 gallon one. I want to use a canister filter for this tank because i hear that they are better. I'm just wondering what filter is the best to use I was thinking of getting a Fluval canister filter but wanted to know if there was any better ones? If any one has experince with this filter or any others any information would be appreciated

I'd reccomend one of the eheim ecco ones. Either [link=this one]http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp17290/si1382871/cl0/eheimeccocomfortcanisterfilter2236 [/link] or the one that's one size smaller.
They're really quiet, fairly small, pretty easy to maintain. And under $100. I ran one on my 30long back in the states and it worked very well .

If you want a quality unit there is only one brand and that is Eheim, certainly it will cost more but the old saying "You only get what you are paying for"
The Ecco 2233 is suitable for up to 60USgal it would not hurt to have that little extra power. The 2231 is for up to 35USgal. The Clasic 2213 is suitable for up to 66USgal.
For more info EHEIM

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I have a 55g that I will be setting up over the winter. I intend to get an Eheim Cannister filter for it... I hear they are the best. I have an Aqua Clear HOB on my 20g, works great!

It is not just the water quality and tank environment you need to take into account. Does the filter suit you AND your tank?

I switched over types a while back and look at choosing a filter like this:

What is involved in maintaining each of the types.

Does the amount of lifting suit?

If you live alone and have to remove the 4ft hood on your own to clean out the filter will this be tricksy?

Does anyone else help with the maintenance and will they be able to restart the filter after cleaning?

What's the worst case scenario for each filter if the electricity gets cut/restarts? How will the floors fare in the event of a malfunction? (renting? parents house? college?, makes a diff)

As far as canister filters go, I'm a big fan of the Rena XP series. Good quality and comparatively cheap to some of the other canisters. For the tank size that you're thinking about getting, I'd recommend the Rena XP2.

They're a nice little self-contained unit, easy to clean and all that. The impeller does have a tendency to get a little noisy when the filter get dirty, so just make sure to clean it every few weeks. One thing I will say, though, is that the filter comes with these cheap little plastic hose clamps -- do yourself a favor and go to a hardware store and buy actual metal clamps. The plastic ones don't hold for crap, and the pressure from the filter might blow off the return hose, at which point you're having water spraying out of your filter at a rate of 300 gph.

Now, an XP2 is a little bit of overkill for a 40-50 gallon tank (I'm a big fan of over-filtration). If you're going to be stocking it lightly, you can probably get away with using an XP1 as long as you keep up on the maintenance.
