Is the tank planted? I presume by 12 in the morning you mean 12 noon.

If the tank isn't planted you may find yourself having problems with algea. Also is there any natural light in the room with the tank? If so the tank will actually be lit for a significant period of time and fish need their sleep too!

Probably better to put the light on some time in the morning and turn it off as it's getting dark outside.

I'm no expert, but we usually turn our son's tank light off around 9pm, then turn it on again at 7am. This gives the fish plenty of time to sleep, and gives my son a chance to enjoy his pets after he comes home from day camp.

Our tank: 45 gallons
7x Cardinal Tetras 7x Black Neon Tetras
7x Glowlight Tetras 2x Ottos 2x Ghost Shrimp 3x Spotted Corys 3x Panda Corys

The hours you've got it on are okay.

If it's planted generally 10-12 hours for most species of tropical plants that are used to a longer growing period.

If its not planted and one sees a problem with algae in their tank photoperiod can be shortened as needed. Fish don't need that much bright light after all .

That was me deleting a duplicate post, as much as I like to think I am fascinating people don't need to read my posts twice I am sure *blush*

My tanks are not planted (stocked with fish that come from rocky shores) so I have my timers set to come on at 6.30pm and switch off at 9.30pm.

If I am at home and enjoying them I flick the override switch.

But during the daytime they have ambient light from the windows... I keep the lights limited to times I will be home to enjoy them in an attempt to keep the algae in check.

btw welcome mtbgirl

Both my timers are set for about 7.30am and turn off about 11hrs later. Both tanks are heavly planted as you can see in Photobucket.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
