Thinking about moving to a planted tank, have a silly question. Do you still vacuum the gravel if you have rooted plants in your tank? wouldn't you run the risk of uprooting everything, or do you just have to be extra careful? Are there any other upkeep issues that make planted aquarium care substantially different than unplanted, aside from the plants' nutrient/co2 requirements?

Thanks all...

Depending on the plants you choose you could just go around them

Walla,

You still vacuum the tank. However, you should not deep vacuum around rooted plants. Simply create a current above the substrate to lift the mulm and debris off the gravel and vacuum it away.

WallaWalla- Don't worry, I'm sure many other "plant begginers" had this same question (including myself)
Yeah, like said before, just in places with no roots

Yes, like was said before:

- vacuum in areas where you have free access to the gravel
- stir up the “dirt” with your hand (wiggle it above the plants) where you can’t access the gravel

And enjoy the world of a planted aquarium

BTW, do you have any ideas yet of what you want to do? What is your hardware setup (tank size, light, filter)?

Have fun,
