There are plenty of other fish that'll go in a small tank, such as a male betta or a trio of females, but you have to make sure the fish you choose can't eat your shrimp. They will do best in a heated tank (or a consistently warm room) with a few live plants, and you'll want to provide them with a cave for molting and hiding. Putting java moss on the cave will also provide a place for baby shrimp to hide out, if you're lucky enough to start them breeding. Adding a few drops of marine iodine and possibly a liquid calcium if you have soft tap water (Kent is a good brand for both of these, and you want to use 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended dose per gallon) will also help them survive molting and their ability to grow strong shells.
