What kind of crabs? From your post about octopi, I assume you're thinking saltwater. Have you ever maintained a saltwater tank before? It's a bit different than a freshwater setup, and more can go wrong. You might want to spend some time in the saltwater forums.

If you have a reef setup, there are a number of crabs that are suitable for any size tank. They are often considered part of the "cleanup crew" as they eat detrius off the bottom of the tank and in all the nooks and crannies of your rock/coral/decor.

Most freshwater crabs, actually prefer brackish or slightly salt water, but they will need access to fresh water to drink. Since they also need access to air, a tank only partially full of water is best, with a sand bed or some kind of surface out of the water. You can have 2 or so crabs in a 10 gal. tank together, but they are territorial so add more at your own risk. They are also not good tankmates for fish, as they will try to catch them, and are alsmost always eventually successful. Most fish too large to be considered dinner by the crab might very well consider the crab to be a tasty meal itself, so a species-only tank is best for these critters.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
