Hi there,
recently I was in my favorite pet store,
and they had a shrimp labelled as
"Japanese Algae Eating Amano Shrimp" for $4.50
for two, which is a pretty good price here
for shrimp.
However, I didnt buy any yet, as they were terribly
small, and I had the sneaking suspicion they were
actually ghost shrimp.
So, how do you tell the difference in the two?
These shrimps were maybe 1/4- 1/2 inch in length.
Also, How big do either of these species get,
and would a Paradise fish eat them?
Thanks.

Amano shrimp are brown with a cream colored stripe down their backs. If they are too small, they may still be transluscent, and females have a more ounced stripe than males. Ghost shrimp are transluscent at any stage of life with no stripe at all, and they have a ounced "hump" in the middle of their backs. This site has pretty good pictures of young amano shrimp as well as ghost shrimp: http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/misc_critters/shrimp_ghost.htm

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Ghosts not only are more transparent but they seem to have a more ounced hump to the body, amanos are flatter.

If the shrimp are young a paradise shrimp will more than
likely not pass up the chance for a snack. The above have
provided good information on differentiating the two types of
shrimp.

The chance is very high that paradise fish would at least pick on but probably completely eat any shrimp you put in the tank.
