Okay. Was back at the LFS last night. It has a fact sheet next to the tank now. Apparently they are Paratya spp.

Thanks!

Whoever said Neptune Aquarium at Blacktown was right, they are there for $0.50 each.

There are also some at Wentworthville for about $3 each.

Sorry Rupey,

I'm in Melbourne. This guy has been around so long I can remember visiting him when I was small with my Dad.

I can ask him to recommend someone in Sydney though if you like. Which end are you?

Hi Helen,
It sounds like you do have a good LFS in Australia - if you're in Sydney then please let me know where they are! I have had such bad luck with LFS - with one I got snails, another bad information, and another I got fish fungal infection.

Kribs aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

But i guess it depends on the Kribs personalitie.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the response. Actually I get confused I actually meant Siamese Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus). Somewhere early on I got it in my head that they were Chinese Algae Eaters and it's stuck.

Kribs? Well I've had two pairs during the last two years. Sucessfully raised to adults with my first pair. Unfortunately, mamma got over being a mummy and wanted to do the wild thing but pappa was more interested in looking after his brood. She got insistent and wounded him and I had to euth him. Apart from beating up each other and chasing off the other fish when breeding (understandable ) I've never had a problem. In fact the fish profile lists them as peaceful.

Helen,
Might I suggest to you not to get Chinese Algae Eaters.
They are highly aggressive when they get older and they grow very large (10-14 inches), and often seem to find fish tastier than algae. Might I instead recommend to you the Siamese Algae Eater. Smaller (~5 inches), schooling, and dynamite at eating most kinds of algae.
heres a picture of the little guys, I have 3 and they have cleared up my hair algae super
Siamese Algae Eater
Also, I dont know if you are aware of it, but Kribs are very aggressive african cichlids. They really shouldnt be kept with community species as the community fish, espescially other bottom dwellers like your Rams, will likely get killed. As Kribs are an african fish, they do not speak the same language as the other fish, and this will and does often result in murder, death, and torture of other fish by the kribs. I would remove them if I were you, preferably before they breed, as then you will definetly have dead fish on your hands.

I was wondering if someone could tell me more about these guys. I asked for something that would help clean up the leaf litter in my 100USG tropical at my excellent LFS and they suggested Glass Cleaner Shrimp.

I can't seem to find anything on them on the internet though. Are they called something else?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi. Thanks Ferret and Callatya.

Ferret - I think I would have to break down my tank to find them. I'm not even convinced they are still alive. But it's a big tank with loads of places to hide (including behind my background). Admittedly I haven't been spending as much time on my tank watching hobby the last week or two so who knows. I do know that at least one survived for a few weeks. Thanks for the offer though.

Callatya - cool, I was kind of thinking maybe I should add more but read that Ghost Shrimp get up to 3" so was a bit wary of filling up with shrimp as they reach maturity.

After firing my housecleaners after their second decimation of my tank I am slowly restocking up to what I had before they killed the bulk of my livestock in April.

I have:

12 Black Widow Tetras
1 pair of Kribs (buggers won't settle on a breeding cave)
10 Red & Blue Colombian Tetras
10 Glow Lights
3 Neons (I know, I know but my betta who then up and karked it was picking them off)
2 Gold Dust Mollies (plus assorted babies some of which are like black lace from midway down - I'm planning to keep them, 7, but the rest will go to the LFS).
1 Golden Ram - having trouble keeping mates for him alive although he is active, visible and happy.
1 Bristlenose plus assorted babies most of which will go to the LFS as they reach a decent size.

Planning to add:

2 Golden Rams (female)
24 Neon Tetras
3 Chinese Algae Eaters (the Hair Algae is going wild)
6 Chocolate Gourami

Not sure of:

pair of Coral Neon Gourami
Croaking Gourami

My tank is set up to kind of reflect my idea of what an Amazon stream might look like but haven't done much in the way of research - it looks great though even though I'm waiting for some of my mid ground stuff to grow in.

Your help is really appreciated.

You probably have Atyidae shrimp Helen, its about the only small ones you can get over here.

6 wont do muc to a tank that size. I put 40 into my 20 gallon, and although they are cool, they dont eat large pieces very well.

What do you already have in the tank? maybe we can come up with a better solution for you

I don't think they can carry ich, being inverts...Never thought of that before. I think ghost shrimp will get along with everyone, you just have to be careful that they don't end up as a meal. Good thing is that they're cheap, and they don't reproduce like crazy either.

Back to the original question, at work (my LFS) we sell ghost shrimp and we sell algae eating shrimp, which are bigger and different from the oh-so-common ghost shrimp. They might also share the common name you mentioned. If you can post a clear picture, I think I could ID which you have if you wanted.

Hi. I was wanting to add a few of these in my tank & was wondering if these guys could carry ICH? Should I still add them in my secondary tank for awhile before adding them to my 72 gal? Would they be alright with Gauramis? ONe more thing... Do they multiply excessively? I dont want another snail episode. THANKS!!

Thank you for your responses.

I have only seen them twice (I bought 6) since they went in but there's a lot of hidey holes. Once in the gaps in my "stream" rocks and once I saw one shoot across the tank after being disturbed.

I was really hoping these guys would be cleanup crew for me. The crispus has been having a melt ever since I broke down the tank to insert the new background. Oh well.

Yes they are most likely talking about ghost shrimp which dont really clean up that much but will munch on some types of algea. THey are fairly cheap so you may want to buy alot of them because you might not see just one or two that often in that size of a chance.
