Malaysian Trumpet Snails...Rule! | |
GobyFan2007 Fish Addict Posts: 615 Kudos: 363 Votes: 65 Registered: 03-Feb-2007 | Hi there! I have gone to the LFS on sunday to pick up a couple of Rasboras, when i saw a tank completely infested with these little buggers. I instantly knew what they are, and asked if they were selling them. The response was that they were giving them away for free. I was so overjoyed, and the clerk gave me like 24 of them! I was just wondering @ what rate do they multiply, and if they really do burrow under the gravel. I have 3 inches of gravel, and i would love for them to make it their home! I have a bunch of BBA on my anubias too, so i hope they will help! Does anybody have any testimonies? I would love to hear them! Thanks! ><> ~=!Vote Today!=~ <>< -----> View My Dragons <----- |

Yes they stay under the gravel for the most part and come out during lights off. I have BBA in my tank and my mts did not reduce the amount. They are beneficial, tunnel thru the gravel eating waste as they go. Their tunneling keeps the substrate from compacting. This is beneficial to healthy root growth. Also helps prevent toxic gas pockets to not build up in the gravel. Additional nutrients for the plants through their own waste, eat decaying plant matter from the surface of your substrate as well as at night helping to keep it looking clean as well as eating some algaes. If these are already well established in your tank and any snail you DON'T want gets in the tank, it will have to compete with the mts for food. All in all a good snail, as with any snail species, don't overfeed your tank and your snails will stay at managable levels. The Amazon Nut... |

Every so often a mass hatching occurs and heaps of babies make their way up the glass. Their shells are quite hard so fish don't eat them. I have never seen them on a plant eating algae tho. If my black algae gets too prevalent, I nip off the worst affected leaves which seems to help stop it spreading. I also limit the lighting hours when its on a growing session. |
