Do I need to remove the shell? It's just laying at the bottom of the tank.

You can leave it there. The cray might eat it, as it contains lots of calcium that will help it harden it's new shell. If the cray ignores it, then just remove it when you do the next water change. It isn't going to pollute the tank, so don't worry about it.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
