Procambarus hinei Dwarf Crayfish | |
illustrae Fish Addict Posts: 820 Kudos: 876 Registered: 04-May-2005 | I've recently become addicted to aquabid, and I'm a fan of crustaceons, so what happens when I see dwarf crayfish listed for sale? Impulse buy! Seriously, I really wanted a crayfish for my 30 gallon tank, but didn't want it to eat my fish, so these guys, only reaching about 2-2.5 inches and very peaceful to boot, seemed like a perfect addition. I originally got shrimp to put in that tank, but my gouramis (even the tiny sparkling gouramis) started harassing them and ripping off legs and antennae, so having something vageuly shrimp-shaped that could easily defend itself seemed like a great idea. The auction was for 6 of them, and only one died in transit, so I now have 5 of these guys roaming about my 30 gal. planted tank. My pleco doesn't like them at all, but overall everyone's getting along fine, and the little crays are quite facinating to watch. Check 'em out! http://www.dartmouth.edu/~illustrae/everyday/pictures/pict0010_25.jpg http://www.dartmouth.edu/~illustrae/everyday/pictures/pict0007_14.jpg http://www.dartmouth.edu/~illustrae/everyday/pictures/pict0014_23.jpg Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

Wingsdlc Fish Guru What is this? Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 | illustrae, Where did you get these guys and how much did the cost? Do you think I could trust them in a 55 Gal with a pair of Convicts give enough hiding spots? 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

illustrae Fish Addict Posts: 820 Kudos: 876 Registered: 04-May-2005 | I got them from a seller on Aquabid.com (Like Ebay for the aquarium hobby). I paid $18 USD for six of them, plus shipping, and they were delivered to my house through the mail. I was told specifically not to keep them with agressive carnivores (i.e. cichlids) who might find them a tasty snack, so I would not keep them with convicts. They are very peaceful, but not very fast, so I don't think they would last long at all in a tank with convicts, unfortunately. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

Usually their attention doesn't stay on anything long enough to do it harm. If an applesnail happens to be in their path it gets nipped but then they are off again. The shrimp just duck under the plants till the gouramis leave. |
