I think I have decided to retire my shrimp tank.
It is a 7 gal. bowfront tank that was my first tank years ago when I graduated college and wanted to keep pets again. U I subjected 5 poor goldfish to this bowl (not all at the same time, but still), as well as a common pleco that I had no idea would grow to be the 10" behemoth he is today, 7 years later.
When I finally wized up and got larger tanks and became hopelessly addicted to this hobby, I turned my smallest tank into a red cherry shrimp colony. I started with 5 shrimp, and now I probably have 50 or more. But now I am trying to make room for more larger tanks to try new things with, and I'm afraid I am no longer very interested in the shrimp.

But what do I do with them all? There's a chance I can sell or trade them for credit at a not-so-local fish store, but I havn't been there when the manager has been working, so I'm not 100% sure about that. I could add them to my planted tank, but I'm fairly certain the Gouramis and tetras would reduce them to tasty tidbits. I'm not necessarily opposed to that, but it's not my first choice. I could add them to my rainbow fish tank, but they'd probably suffer the same fate. However, if the LFS doesn't take them, Splitting the population between these two tanks and seeing what happens is probably what I will do.
I had considered selling them on Aquabid, but there are always so many auctions for red cherry shrimp that it doesn't seem worth it, and I have never shipped live fish or shrimp before, so I couldn't garantee live arrival or anything.

First thing I need to figure out is how to catch and count them all...

Anyone have any suggestions, tips, ideas, etc.?

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Selling cherry shrimp is easy. They always seem to be in high demand. I don't know much at shipping them though so maybe someone else can help you with that if that is your choice.

Why didn't you tell me 3days ago. I just bought a whole bunch off ebay to fill my 5g shrimp tank which I think will turn into a 10g shrimp tank when I get the 10g cleaned up again. But I also got 5 more rainbow shrimp out of that deal.

What state are you in, if you are anywhere nearby I would like to purchase them.

Well, I live in the middle-of-nowhere New Hampshire... And I don't drive. That's why my LFS is not so local, and why I don't know if there's a good market for the shrimp around where I live.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

There's a huge market for them online if you want to attempt shipping. Despite there being lots of listings they always sell on aquabid or ebay. Shipping shrimp isn't overly difficult. You just need the smaller sized priority mail box, a few bags, and some newspaper, styrofoam, or bubble wrap for padding. The padding can be found at most stores with office supplies. A priority box has a set shipping rate no matter where you are in the US or the weight of the contents. Shrimp handle a 3-4day shipping time with very few losses so long as you include a heat pack or ice pack as needed.
