what kind of bottom feeder would you put in a 5g tank together with a betta.
I was thinking of a couple of corys but I know they prefer larger schools.

To start off with that tank would be too small for a school of Cories as they are better in schools of 6-8+.
I have several Khuli Loaches in my Betta tank providing they have plant cover you can see them at any time. Mine are now swiming up and down the front of the tank. At feeding they are very busy cleaning up all the uneaten food in those hard to get to places.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Ottos would work, maybe one or two. They stay quite small.

I've been thinking ghost shrimp lately. Ofcourse there is a risk they'll end up as snack food for the betta.

I don't know if they're what you had in mind, but here are a few suggestions....

You could get a large snail, like an apple snail,

OR

A couple of ADFs would work well

I'd go kuhlies if you want clean-up of uneaten food.

Otos are nice and small, but hideously messy for their size so only go that way if you have good filtration.

I like the loaches, but don't they get awful big for such a small tank? It's a 5 gallon high hex.
Can they be kept alone or should they be in couples/groups?
