Provided they get along, of course, would it be okay to keep 3 betta females (one crowntail and two plakats) in a 5.5 gal. tank? The tank will be planted and filtered (I'm also a little concerned about too much current in such a small tank).

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

If you are worried about the flow of your filter I think people would probabyl need to know a little more abotu your filter.... That sounds like it will be very pretty. Someone might object to that. I do not think that will be a baed idea though.

Well, I'm having trouble picking out a filter due to the dimensions of the tank (it's an octagon that's about a foot wide each way and a foot tall, so the sides are only barly 5 inches wide each). The opening is just barely too small for the aquaclear mini, so I've been considering one or two of the Hagen Stingray filters (http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F28/Class/Fish+Supplies+Power+Filters/T1/F26CA+0171+1350/EDP/47755/Itemdy00.aspx)
Or possibly this cheap HOB (http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F28/Class/Fish+Supplies+Power+Filters/T1/F26DA+0462+0513/EDP/40076/Itemdy00.aspx)
Decisions... decisions...

the stingray filter looks the best. it may be more expensive but it is probably better quality. flat and can be hidden easily in a 5 gallon tank by plants.

That sounds like a very good idea. I would put 3 different types of bettas in the tank instead of 3 of the same kind. 3 different colors too would make it even prettier IMO. You should post pictures when you get it up. I would love to see what it looks like.
