I've been told there's no point to using Aquarium salt on a Betta, since it's only for Brackish water fish. Is this the case? I'm beginning to be uncertain about the expertise of the source.

I use salt too!!! I have found that it helps the fish keep a healthy slime coat and also helps prevent diseases.

I use salt in all of my Betta tanks and always have. All of my Bettas are in 2.5 gallon AGA's, and I treat with just over a half teaspoon per tank. I use it in my Angel tank too, and that takes about a tablespoon/5 gallons. Good Luck

My aquarium salt says to make sure there's maximum aeration and filtration, but I don't use either... are the manufacturers just covering their butts in terms of instructions, or should I be worried?

Hi BetaVu,
Please don't go overboard with the salt on the betas, IMO I would not use anymore than 1 teaspoon to 10 litres of Beta water. Please remember that betas in the wild live in the hoofprints in the paddy fields and the canals, irrigation ditches, and only have a limited amount of salts in the water. A little is good (OK) but over do it and you may pickle them. Good luck. Muss

Uh... no one's mentioned that aquarium salt is NOT used for brackish water? You need to use the same salt you'd use for saltwater to create a brackish tank. They're different substances altogether.

I've only used aquarium salt as a cure, rarely as a preventative. However, my sister swears by it. It really does seem to work for her... she keeps her bettas in one gallon tanks and adds (quite literally) a few grains of salt per gallon. It's seriously a VERY small amount of salt per gallon, but it really does seem to help. She also uses aquarisol as a preventative.

She has one betta that had recurring swim bladder disorders. The slightest bit of stress or lowering temperatures would have him floating. Since starting this regimine of salt, she has NEVER had an issue with the SBD coming back. Even moving back and forth to her school - an hour and a half (or more) long trip - he didn't have any problems.

I've used aquarium salt to heal one of my betta girls of pop-eye at heidi's suggestion. She looks GREAT now, and I was scared I was going to lose her.

I think aquarium salt definitely has its uses... whether or not you chose to use it is up to you.

Before Psycho and the leeches I never even bought aquarium salt, but originally bought it in hopes of killing the leechesno go but had it lying around when Psycho, my betta girl got pop eye and clamped fins, and she is still with us after dosing and dosing and dosing...then it was 2 weeks about later when Twerp, Kitten's little girl had problems and apparently it wasn't just luck for Psycho, because as kitten says twerp is looking good again...so yes there are good uses for it, and if you use it, it is up to you, and especially how you use it...
