Hi there, my betta i got 2 weeks ago is happy in the 5 gallon tank. it is not fully cycled so i think there is ammonia in there. My betta's fin (close to the tail part) is a little white on the sides could it be finrot? caused by ammonia? if it is what should i do? should i get any medical treatments for it?of will it heal itself?thankyou

To start off with a Betta should never be in a tank that is cycling.

What are the water peramiters if you cannot do it then get it done at your LFS.

Have you added any cycle to the tank if so how much and how often.

Also take the Betta back and tell them they should not have sold it to you if you had told them it was a new tank.
See what they say then also do you have any cycling fish inthat tank eg zebra danios?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

pics not good enough(to small and cant see it very well)

it is kinda hard to see as some bettas are sold with a clear tail, so i cant see if it is fin rot, it should be bloodly though.

i am guessing if it is fin rot, than the water is not right, and move the fish, maybe you added fish tofast..

It looks a bit like he's chewed it?? Is it only on the tailor other fins too?

What do the edges look like?

Take the fish out, put him in a bowl of at least 2 litres (preferably a gallon) and change the water every 3 days. All of the water. And dechlorinate and 'rest' the water for 24 hours before a change.

The fresh water should help him heal.

Maybe add a little aquarium salt or melafix to ward off any infections.

To me, it looks like physical damage, but its a tiny photo so its hard to tell.

Are there any other fish or creatures in the tank?

First let me start by saying I'm far from being an expert but I think it looks like fin rot. I would follow Calla's instructions on getting him into a 1 gallon bowl - I would also put in some fin rot meds (I can't think of the exact product that Jungle makes.) there should be someone by in a few that can tell you exactly.
I hope this helps a little,
Stella
