Hi! (long time, no see )

I've had Pongo for about a year now. He went from being a ridiculously active betta to now barely moving. He's got a bad case of fin rot that just won't go away (treating first with melafix for about a month and just recently adding pimafix, too). At first, his tail would get better, then within a few days, worse than what it was previously.

He's in a 1.5 gallon tank, mini filter, weekly 100% water changes. I've taken to also doing partial water changes every 2-3 days, just because I can't get of this stupid fin rot. Also seeing some evidence of SBD today... he's up at the top corner of the tank, kind of on his side, breathing heavily. Earlier, he was posed in a weird S-curve (looking down on him from the top of the tank).

Honestly, I'm completely at a loss as to what to do at this point. The poor thing barely has half his tail left, if that. He's really not doing well. Anyone have any ideas?

Sadly, Pongo didn't make it. He's spent the past few days, laying on the gravel, gasping. He hadn't eaten since last week. I just had a fishy funeral and sent him on to the big fish bowl up in the sky. My desk here at work is going to be lonely, especially when my vacationing coworker comes back to collect HIS betta. Blah. Just thought I'd update you. Sad times.

I'm sorry Kitten that there was nothing you could do that would work.

Sorry to hear about Pongo

I don't know if it will help or not, but bettas have a very short lifespan, generally only about 3 years. It's quite possible it was his time

Yeah, I know... still sucks, though. Blah.

Any thoughts on how to make his tank safe for any future occupant? I don't want to pass any germs, but I have not a clue as to how to sterilize live plants. There's an anubias and some other random stem plants that my coworker keeps giving me when it overgrows his betta's tank.

I've put the filter and decor into steaming hot water, cleaned the tank and gravel with the same, but I'm worried that by putting the plants back into the tank I've just undone any good I accomplished.

There are a few ways to do it, but using unscented bleach is probably the easiest. 1 part bleach to 19 parts water, let the plants soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse well, and then let the plants soak in water treated with your tap water conditioner to get rid of any remaining chlorine.
Don't forget to sterilize any nets you might have used!

Aww I'm sorry kitten,
I'm getting over a bad case of fungus in my tank, infecting two fish and killing two african dwarf frogs. To sterilize the tank I used warm water to clean everything off. It worked but im not sure if it works for what your dealing with. To cheer you up in the slightest bit, your awesome! I've seen you everywhere on this site! BFQ is out...
