Inkling Fish Addict Posts: 689 Kudos: 498 Votes: 11 Registered: 07-Dec-2005 | Okay, My Male Betta has been in his 10 gal breeding setup for over one month(female is in a large 3/4g container that rests in the corner of the tank) The only other thing in the tank is snails, which the bettas ignore compleatly. He sees her, he doesn't flare, she still looks interested. I replaced her with my other male betta, and he didn't flare either (My other male did though) He also has not started a nest in his new tank. Is something wroung with my betta or is it just the conditions he is in? His size: Little over 1" Her Size: 1" Water Temp: 76-ish, I try to keep it a little over 76. Any info will help ^_^ Inkling Inky |

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | 76*F is too low. Ideally you want something around 82*F in order for the fish to feel tropical A small water change (to simulate rain) and a good feed of some high protien live food should do it. Bettas can breed at 3 months +, so they'd have to be pretty young for that to be an issue. They tend to slow down with the breeding at about 12 months, so if these are older fish, they may take some more convincing. take the female out and condition her separately for a week, and then get a coke bottle and slice off the bottom of it, and punch a bunch of holes in it using a soldering iron or very hot bit of me Good luck |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | yea also good points, that size is too small for breeding, and if they did read they would probably be to young to know whwat to do, as young pairs may need to breed for awhile to figure out how to get it right. when they are older, their are otehr tricks such as using blackwater extract to make them breed, or should i say make the water conditions in a good state of being. also i heard that distilled water is good for sim rain, but again i wouldn't force them to breed, and that pair is still too young to breed. |

Inkling Fish Addict Posts: 689 Kudos: 498 Votes: 11 Registered: 07-Dec-2005 | I'll try taking her out of the tank, and getting a small heater... I usually just heat my home, but I think my roommate would kill me if I raised it to 82... I think my bettas are just the right size, as they are probubly about 10 mo - 1 yr old. The female is definitly ready. I tried sticking the jar in Klaus' tank and she went wild, in a good way She is also "full of eggs" and the white dot is present. Also, she seems to be building a nest, like the males do... Whats up with that Perhaps I should try anouther male? Inkling Inky |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | at a year old they shouldn't be around an inch. an sometimes they are just not into breeding now. you can try with another male, just dont get ur hopes up that it will work, but it is possible that it may as well. some females will build their own nest as well. i even had a female that would breed with the males, and hurt them, and raise the young by herself, but ti didn't work out to well. |

Inkling Fish Addict Posts: 689 Kudos: 498 Votes: 11 Registered: 07-Dec-2005 | Should I move her to the 10g and move the male into the jar? I could be not measuring them correctly... I've had them for 2 mo. and they are bolth petstore fish. She really seems to like my older red betta, but he is at least twice her size (at least he looks it) He is building a nest in his tank, although I know he is at least 1 1/2 yrs old. Should I try breeding them? Inky |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | again, u can try but if she or he doesn't want to breed, dont force them as damages can occur, and in younger females that get attacked deeply b/c of unexperience fish keepers they are later in life harder to breed. and these are the females that grow up to become fin nippers. |

Inkling Fish Addict Posts: 689 Kudos: 498 Votes: 11 Registered: 07-Dec-2005 | I may try Klaus/female in a controlled one gal, since she already has the nest going. I put My other Male in (the one who wouldn't flare) and he built off of it (mabey he is just a late bloomer ) She seems very, um, willing, for a betta, its just he seems uninterested. Perhaps by trying in a more controlled enviornment, I'll have more success. Inky |
