It depends on your bettas, as some are more aggressive than others. So your fish may or maynot like the DG. The same applies to the DG, it may or maynot like the betta. The very common answer you will hear is no, bettas will attack gouramies and flashy fish, but that isnt always a set way and isnt always 100% true. i think itreally would be ok havinga betta in with a DG, just make sure their is enough gallons, because DG arent really that small and they should have around 10 gallons. |

I personally would not do it. I have read that the red Bettas can be more aggressive but my Betta is rtather shy and prefers hiding with just his head poking out between the plants that is except feeding time. She said she would definitely not combine the two because they are from the same family. So that answered my question, it also showed me that some fish store clerks aren't just out for the sell and are willing to help when asked. I found them to be some of the most agressive of all the gouramis I've kept. They would not get along with each other or any other species of labyrinth fish I had. Eventually they all killed each other and the last one died of unknown causes. I know people say they like company but it better be 1male to lots of females because all the males I had went on an all out slaughter even when put in a 55g tank. In my opinion they beat out my 3 spots for most agressive gourami. At least the 3 spots came down to individual temperament and some would get along but I never had any luck with any of the dwarf gouramis. I might try it with something like moonlights, pearls, honey, etc... but not dwarf or 3spot. I also talked to several people who tried putting tiny sparkling gouramis in with bettas and the gouramis ganged up on the betta. They don't seem to mind any other gourami species though. |

Rofllcopter Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 4 Votes: 0 Registered: 23-Jul-2007 | bettachris has the right idea, the thing with labrynth fish is that they each have their own personalities. I once had a turquoise VT and an opaline Gourami in a 17 gallon, they were best friends. but my beta died(he was 3 years old) and the gourami went on this rampage of destruction when it found out, it killed my crayfish, and tore up all the plants in the tank, and it hid in this little cave for three days and wouldnt eat for 2 more days after that. but hes back to normal now and has a new beta freind(its a turquoise VT). its gonna be pretty hard to convince me that a betta and a gourami will never get along, so they must to a cirtain extent, although i dont know what would happen if there was more than one gourami in a tank with a beta. which might be your question. ~He who dares not grasp the thorns, should never crave the rose~ |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | Actually I had an opaline with a male betta and then I had my very agressive male blue gourami with a female betta for nearly a year. He wouldn't share a 55g tank with even females of the same species or dwarf gouramis but did fine with the female betta. Which is why in my opinion dwarf gouramis are worse than 3 spots but I still wouldn't reccomend trying any betta with any 3 spot gourami unless you have a backup plan. Female bettas have a higher chance of getting along but personally I wouldn't plan on it. I might try it if I already had the fish and the other tanks to immediately move them to when it didn't work. Otherwise best not to risk it. If you don't have a backup plan then keep either bettas or gouramis. |
