I have 2 blue Gouramis but their both males, of course the larger of the two constantlu harrases the other. I'm gonna bring the smaller male back & get a female. I was just wondering if I get a Gold female would that be o.k. I'm not trying to mate them or anything I would just like to add a different color fish to the tank, while staying w/ the same gourami. If not I'll just get a blue female. (55gallons)

If you can get a female, things should be okay. Gold gouramis are the same species as blues, just a different color variation. They are basically the same thing, except for the colors.

Male gouramis tend to fight quite a bit, especially if they are of the same species. Switching the smaller male with a female will lower the aggression from the big male greatly. You probably won't have as many gourami problems now, though that will still depend on the personality of the female! Incidentally, there is a possibility that they will breed, it happy enough.

cool, I'll head out over the weekend & make the exchange. Thanx. Also I know the males would be @ each other but I didn't know how to tell them apart & the dude claimed it was a male & female. Of course now I know he was either mistaken or didn't know what he was talkin bout, I'll give em the benefit of the doubt. Now that I know how to tell the difference I'll point out the one I want

when you want something done right do it yourself lol. never trust a employee to pick a male/female out. may as well flip a coin. research and take notes. take pictures in with you if you have to. you may feel like a newb for 5 mins or think people are looking at ya because you brought notes and a pic lol. 5 mins is nothing compared to the yrs you own the right fish lol.

just for the record, how do you tell male from female gouramis? its the curve in one of their fins right? one is rounded off the other is more squared?

I have ten medium male Opaline Gourami and no FMs at all other than the litle chase now and again I have never seen any aggression towards each other. I was well informed before I purchased them they are the least aggressive of the larger Gourami.

I personally think the blue variety are the most aggressive. I have also had several male pearl Gourami and they showed little aggression towards each other.

I will admit I have only bought them when thery are small yet big enough to select the males I wanted.

I returned one of the males & got a gold female. Seems much better now. The female seems to cling to the male & follow him everywhere,

The males have pointed dorsal fins vs the females rounded ones.

I have a pair of blue dwarf males in a 29 gal tank, and they get along OK. They spend time at opposite ends of the tank and sometims meet in the middle. Aside from a few squabbles (very mild squabbles), they are fine.
Also, aside from the fins, the coloring on the females is not as bright. the colors on the males is more vibrant and lively.

I'm a LFS employee and I'm very good at sexing most kinds of fish, and usually the ones that I can't are ones that other people can't either...

I don't know if it's the same for regular gourami's.

But with Dwarf Gourami's, female will have a rounded dorsal fin, while males have a pointed one.
Females will also tend to be very bland in colour, in compairson to the male, a silver or tanish colour.

I recently had a male and female dwarf gourami in a 10G planted tank, the male was great for a while, harassed the female only a little bit, a week later the female harassed the male, and it all went down hill from there, the male died after that.
That little female was an evil wench.. *can I say that here?*

i WOULDNT get the gold.

Mixing blue/gold gouramis usually increases agressiveness. I have witnessed this as my golds harass the blues ALOT more than they harass each other.

I would go with another Blue. Also, the male will probably beat the female up after you get it.
