Dwarf Gouramis | |
abc321cba Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 26-Nov-2005 | Hello. I have a tank with dimensions 18x10x10. I think its about 8gals (30 something litres). I was wondering if this would be big enough for 2 dwarf gouramis (male and female). Or maybe just one male. I've heard they can get quite stroppy with other fish. Thanks |

Therefore I would not use your tank for them. Have a look in [link=My Profile]http:// www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/profile.asp?userid=6741" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] for my tank info [link=Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tanks]http://photobucket.com/albums/b209/keithgh/Betta%20desktop%20tank/" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Dwarf gouramis aren't schooling fish, and can be territorial with one another if kept without sufficient room. If you can find a male/female pair, they would be fine in that tank. However, it can be difficult to find females since they aren't as "pretty" as males. A single male would also work. In a really big tank they would probably prefer a group but in a tank that size you'd be lucky to find 2 males that would get along well enough to still have 2 a week from now. Someone will probably be dead. I never had them bother other fish but 3 in a 20g long harassed each other to death. |

I went to the LFS today just to have a look at the dwarf gouramis and they had 7 female gouramis for sale. I asked them how often they buy them in, they said they get 10 every 2 weeks. So i guess I have some chance at finiding myself a female. |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | I believe borneo sucker is a name for one of the hillstream loaches. They are quite a specialized fish and do best in a specialized tank. They need tons of oxygen and water movement so that might conflict with gouramis which are from areas of low oxygen and slow to no current. They also prefer somewhat cooler waters and will usually die off above 78F. There's a whole section devoted to these fish on loaches.com [link=http://loaches.com/hillstream_intro.html]http://loaches.com/hillstream_intro.html" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] It's possible to put them in a tank with other fish but much easier if those fish like lots of water movement and possibly air stones adding bubbles. I used white cloud minnows for my hillstream tank. |

abc321cba Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 26-Nov-2005 | Okay, so that would mean a fishless cycle? Does that mean I just set up the tank (put plants in, etc) and let the filter do the rest? During this time should I be doing any water changes? Thanks |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | You can either cycle the tank fishless or with hardy fish like danios and add the gouramis later or if you are confident enough you can add the gouramis and do lots of water changes. Dwarf gouramis aren't real sensitive to ammonia and nitrites but you'd want to do lots of water changes to keep them low. The cycle would be slow and involve more work. If your planting the tank that would help tons since the plants would use up the ammonia-nitrate. Depends if you think you can get a female or not in a month or so when the tank is cycled, if you have anywhere to put 1 temporarily, how heavily you plan on planting the 15g, and how much work you want to do. You would also have to return the danios or find them another home after the tank is cycled. Last edited by sham at 01-Dec-2005 23:02 |

chelaine Big Fish Posts: 383 Kudos: 343 Votes: 78 Registered: 23-Jul-2005 | on the subject of dwarf gouramis, i just bought two males for my 55 gallon.. its stocked with mainly mollies, a common pleco, skirt tetras and danio. what i was wondering was, should i bring in some females? and if so, how do they breed? should i add more males? or should i switch up some varieties? also, i have an air wand on one end of the tank that disturbs the surface area, and the other side has a HOB filter that disturbs the surface there.. should i call the bubble wand quits? *Chelle* I love the fishes cuz they're SOOO delicious... |
