Dwarf gourami in a 16g | |
desiredusername Enthusiast Posts: 182 Kudos: 99 Votes: 36 Registered: 26-Sep-2006 | will a dwarf gourami fit in a 16 gallon tank along with 10 neons and an upside down catfish? If so how many, what are breeding conditions for this fish? |

I dont know if u could fit 2 males in togeather as they would not fight it is only when u get a female in there they fight. Also i dont know about where u live but in the UK the LFS have stopped selling the females as no one buys them because thye have no colour. |

waldena Hobbyist Posts: 117 Kudos: 80 Votes: 71 Registered: 30-Jan-2006 | I'm not sure I agree with Juwel-180 (sorry ), I think 2 males would fight regardless of the lack of females, especially in a smaller tank. I would definitely just go with the single male. You may just about fit 2 DG's in there with that stocking (not sure with the catfish though - not overly familiar with them). I find that the LFS in my area stock males and females, but they will only sell them as a male/female pair, to prevent the issue of people only buying males for their colour. Anyway, who doesn't deserve the chance of love? |

Maybe you could add a lot of plants to help provide security and safety....... If you add floating plants, they might start to breed, but that wont be good......If you add a lot of surface tension, the bubbles might get destroyed, and he will be constantly be rebuilt, distractind him from the others.... ><> ~=!Vote Today!=~ <>< -----> View My Dragons <----- |

waldena Hobbyist Posts: 117 Kudos: 80 Votes: 71 Registered: 30-Jan-2006 | That would depend on whether your tank has any calm areas, positioning of your HOB. As Gobyfan mentioned, the addition of floating plants will help them to build their bubble nest. It may help create a calm area of the tank and protect the nest. I have Salvinia Natans in my tank, which has long(ish) trailing roots which further helps to protect from the current, and there are definite areas of the tank where it has settled which have a very low current. |

GobyFan2007 Fish Addict Posts: 615 Kudos: 363 Votes: 65 Registered: 03-Feb-2007 | Duckweed, Hornwort(maybe), Moneywort, Anacharis(maybe), and duckweed(did i say that already?). Shadow, I dont think multiple gold gouramis, coz they are known to be the agressive cousin. Especially if you keep two males......youre asking for trouble. Plus size will also matter. The golds get big when theyre older, needing at least a 20 or more(better with more, im not sure a 20 would do).... DesiredName, DG, as long as they are female/female will be fine. It sounds like you are really wanting to breed. Dont be ashamed if you do want to breed. The HOB is a great way to break up the bubble nest. It is the worst, however, when it comes to floating plants. It will push it under so that it will get disturbed, and misplaced. Also, what HOB do you have? If it is a penguin, or something similar to the out flow rate, those are great destroyers. Floating plants dont need Co2, as they are getting it from the atmospheric gases. My advice for good plant growth(exposed to the air) is to talk to your plants. Its kinda weird, but it helps even the tiniest bit. Hope you do well! EDIT: The blue 3-spot, the blue version of the gold gourami, is rumored to be less agressive because they are bred for color. I have experienced it before.......And you can tell male from female coz males have pointed dorsal fins. Pearls are nice too! Shadow reccomended a nice one! ><> ~=!Vote Today!=~ <>< -----> View My Dragons <----- |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | blue gouramies would be a bad choice. Frankly too large and can be very aggressive, and of course when in breeding mode, they will beconme even more aggressive. My largest male blue gourami is about 6-7 inches long right now, and he would probably cause problems for small fishes like neonms. back to DG, like stated, female DG are probably never going to be found in most lfs, for the same reason as stated, they arent colorful so they arent an "eye catcher" If you would like to find a female DG, i can help you with that but anyway breeding gouramies shouldnt be done in a community tank. But tthat is another issue. floating plants like duck weed and java moss that is attacted to suction cups will be great cover for gouramies. |
