This Ive never seen in any kind of fish, but I saw it today....

2 Female bettas had jumped out of the water and had lodged themselves in the corner where the glass are stuck together by the silicone paste. I guess the silicone creates somewhat of an adhesive surface which allows them to stick. I freaked out thought they were dead, went to touch them and they jumped back in..

I was like

I went inside, called Redphantom to tell him and when i went back they were again there......

They jump out of the water and adhere themselves to the corner...

How freaking odd is this behavior???

Is there any thing else in the tank that could cause that?
Also is there any outside interferance cat etc?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

The only time I've had that happen was with a male, and it wasn't a happy ending.

I'd treated him for camellanus a few weeks before, but I don't think his body quite recovered and when I tried to spawn him, he was repetedly hopping out onto a fake lily pad. When he did it the third time, I popped him back in his tank and he died a few days later.

I've only ever heard of one other betta doing it, and it was in response to a very aggressive (as in killer TDTB, bad combo!) male.

Is the male being vicious?
Do you have plenty of hiding spaces for them?
Is the tank humid above the water? is it fogging up etc?
What is the pH like? (don't adjust if it is out)
Is the tank cycled?
What do the fish eat?

For now, perhaps it would be an idea to separate out the fish and go through the method carefully to see what could be causing them to do this.

Can you get a picture of your setup and your fish at all? Maybe we can tweak the tank and the method a bit and see if we can't get you some better results.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Hey guys, I appreciate the responses....

Heres the scenario, they are in a 10 gallon tank with some elodea, a rock where they like to hide (almost underneath it) and have no males around (at least not in the tank). The ph was about 7.5 and there is no fogging or humidity outside of the water level. There are only female bettas in there and all seem to mind their own business, they dont really seem to be fish that do much of anything.... so theyre not afraid of a "predator". I also checked to see if there were any water nymphs as per Redphantoms recommendation (he even dreams of nymphs ) and couldnt see any...

I went by the LFS half an hour ago and something the lady said made at least some sense, she asked if there were any mosquitoes around the tank, said that bettas sometimes will try and jump out of the water as they go to catch em. I know it may sound a tad 'out there' but I do know there are plenty of mosquitoes in that room as it is in contact with the back yard and I have been getting bit by them lately.... so I wouldnt discard the theory completely....

What do you t hink of it?

Can you put a glass cover on to the tank that will stop any fish jumping? I had a Silver Shark I have lost count how many times he jumped out I just picked him up and off he went again. For some reason he was extremly flighty not like any of the other SS. He finally jumped through a very small gap 20mm wide and on to the floor one night when the lights were out.

Hey Keith, theyre not jumping out of the tank, just out of the water, and "holding on" to the silicone that unites the glass (in other words, the corner)....

I have that tank filled about a bit more than half way, about 6 gallons worth.....
