what is the trick to keeping gouramis alive???
i have had three dwarf gouramis, but they all fell ill to dropsy and i did not effect any other fish in the tank at the time. i had two die from it one after i started to medicate and then a couple of weeks later i bought another and he then died too from the same symptoms. but the thing is that the meds. should have killed the rest of the dropsy. also the 2 gouramis before my third were from different stores. what could have been the cause??? or was i not doing something right??? any ideas please? i has been about 6 months since then but i was just wondering since i would maybe like another gourami someday.

well, dwarf gouramis are a sensitive fish, e to many maladies such as dropsy, popeye, fungus and the lot. Most common fish maladiescan be traced to two things. stress and water quality. my gouramis (dwarf) have been going thru dropsy, fungal fin rot and the like for some time now. I finally was able to put them back in the big tank where waterquality is much easier to maintain. Prevention is the best cure, frequent water changes help a lot there. Some dwarf gouramis, like one of my pair, is quite skittish for some reason and is therefore stressed more than the other. He usually gets sick first. I think pristine water quality and frequent changes are the key to a happy healthy gourami. Also provide him with plenty of cover so he can hide if he feels the need. fish often show no signs of stress till its too late. good luck

I have not kept them for many years. What I do know about them is they can be very sensitive to water conditions and must have a very peacefull tank with plenty of places they can call their own.

It is possible you could have picked up a bad lot which already had several problems.

I also think that Gourami's need good water quality (like most other fish) & the Dwarf type need some hiding places like plants, where they can take a rest.

as with any other fish...they all need gud water...i have not encountered any problem with my dwarf gouramis....i moved them from one tank to the next..and yet..they r hardy enuf...although...the last batch i bought (4 sunsets..) 3 of them died with no apparent reason...water parameters fine 0-0-5. so..i moved the surviro to another tank..and since then, doing well).

it could be that the source ur getting has a bad batch...just like what i had.
