So, I have a feamle betta in a 5 gal. tank. She's been there for about two months now, and for 6 of those 8 weeks she's had a belly full of eggs and a little ovipositor sticking out. But it's been six weeks... shouldn't she have dropped the eggs or absorbed them or something by now? She seems happy and healthy, very active and eating heartily. Should I worry?

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

nope.

the ovipositor will always be visible, so don't worry about that.

the eggs will always be there as long as she is healthy and in a breeding frame of mind, as it is her job to be ready should a good-looking male swim by

The only time you have to worry is if she swells up like she has swallowed a pea, then you can start to think of ways to convince her to drop eggs, but otherwise its not a drama perfectly natural

(BTW, I think gravid may be the wrong word, thats primarily used for fish that give birth to live young. Egglayers tend to be described as 'roed up' or 'ripe' etc. I'm sure there is a proper term for it, but I'm not sure what it is.)

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Well that's good to know.

(Y'know, I actually looked up gravid on dictionary.com and it does specifically refer to livebearers, but also included egg-laying fish. I figured you guys would know what I meant. )
