How big were they? If they were about two inches or larger it is a fair price.

Despite the reputation Ctenopomas have, they are actually quite peaceful fish. Except when breeding when they become territorial, very rarely will they bother another fish they do not consider to be food. They can only be kept with other peaceful fish.

For feeding, some will only accept live fish, but other individuals will learn to accept ghost shrimp or even processed foods such as flakes. In fact, one individual at work a while ago ate only flakes. I couldn't get it to eat any sort of live food.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Sounds like a fair price for my neck of the woods...they're rare fish hereabouts.

Ctenopomas aren't terribly common in most LFS, so as long as they are a decent size, I'd say that's a fair price. They appear to be related to and have the temperment of Gouramis. Planted tanks are ideal for these fish, and in fact one of ther common names is "bushfish". They are fairly peaceful, but can hold their own against larger fish, though they may bully or just snack on very small fish. However, I wouldn't go keeping them with cichlids or anything like that.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

If you really, really want some, there are a few on Aquabid right now. The fish themselves are reasonably priced, but then there's shipping which will make them more expensive. Still, They are nice fish and it might be worth it.
