Mixing types | |
Beardude Big Fish Posts: 309 Kudos: 26 Votes: 2 Registered: 11-Mar-2001 | Is it ok to mix different types of gouramis? I was thinking for my 55G of having trios(1m,2f) of honey, dwarf, pearl and/or moonlight gouramis.....will this cause problems? Thanks |

The only exception I've seen to this is the sparkling gourami. Most gouramis have a hard enough time getting along with others of their own species, so mixing species is usually an invitation for trouble. On the other hand, it does work for some people... How large is your tank? I would start with the trio you want the most, and wait a few weeks before adding another kind of gourami, and be prepared to take them back to the lfs if it looks like it isn't working out. Pearl gouramis are usually the most peaceful, and the moonlight ones will probably be the most agressive, so I would add them last. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

I think a bigger setup, say 75+, would be better for mixing gouramis. More room so they wont get on each others nerves! I think gouramis are actually quite a territorial fish. My past experiences have been that they tend to pick out a lair and just hang around there. Thankyou kindly for your help |

I got a pair a few months ago, and I'm currently trying to find a way to introduce a few more because the male is constantly chasing the female around the tank, and it's very sad seeing a gourami skulk around the bottom of the tank under the plants to avoid being chased. Get a male and two females (the trio plan that you first suggested sounded good). I've even heard that a group of 5 with one or even two males is ideal for Pearls... but I havn't tried it myself. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

girlunderrainbow Big Fish Posts: 323 Kudos: 230 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Aug-2003 | I have mixed, in a 6ft tank, Pearl/Blue/Dwarf Gouramies. Some of the dwarves were aggressive toward each other..one dwarf was aggressive towards most of the other fish..and one dwarf was aggressive toward the much large Blue type gouramies. Of the Blue Gourami types..2 decided they hated each other so much they engaged in almost daily lip locking battles like Kissing Gouramies. I have since come to the conclusion that the Pearl Gourami is an awesome community fish, and my favorite fish. So when I re did my 6 ft a few years ago..I ended up doing 4 females and 3 male Pearls. Among other fish (but no other Gouramies). They did spawn once when I had to unhook the filter for a few days due to mech. probs..I bought a fry net, but somehow lost all of the fry (literally-think there was a hole). Working on repeating breeding again some day. If it were me..I'd do maybe 2 males and 3 females..Pearls..or 1 and 3 and the Moonlights..but Pearls can actually get to be 5" w/out finnage..and Moonlights MUCH larger..personally, I'd only do Moonlights in a much larger tank. But that's just me. |
