Cory_Di *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 7953 Kudos: 2917 Votes: 25 Registered: 19-Dec-2002 | Well, I took the experimental plunge with my two bettas. The red one is Ruby, a betta I inherited when my niece got tired of caring for him (he disappeared one day when she wasn't there ). Ruby was quite sick at the time (finrot that got dangerously close to the ba The blue one is Ruben and I purchased him about 8 months ago. Ruben is in a 3 Gallon Aquatic Gardens tank. It is just a little taller than the Mini-Bow, not wider . Both are powered by airpumps flowing through UGF's - a first for me. I tried several different filtered tank options and in all cases, the bettas tail got messed up just getting a little too close to the intake screen. I didn't have BioSpira, but had Fritz Zyme-7, which is a bacterial starter like BioSpira and am monitoring ammonia and nitrite daily. So far, good after 1 week. These guys just don't produce enough waste to get high levels of toxins, imho and the bacterial starter will help. Oh - and both fish go by the nickname "Rube" . It helped me to not get confused with the two. I kept calling Ruben, "Bubba" for the longest time because he looked like my old betta who passed. Here's Ruby: Cory_Di attached this image: Last edited by Cory_Di at 06-Mar-2005 17:51 Last edited by Cory_Di at 06-Mar-2005 17:51 |

They contribute regularly to the bubbles. You will notice that I have a rounded pebble cave in both tanks, and a fake lily. Both love them. The pebble cave has nothing sharp on it so I have on in every one of my tanks . So many fake caves have sharp edges if you run your finger along the edges and openings. If it can snag a nylon, it will shred a betta fin. Heres Ruben: Cory_Di attached this image: Last edited by Cory_Di at 06-Mar-2005 17:50 |

I have Gofish in a 2.5g mini-bow and am going to set up Valentino in a 10g with my albino cories. I am glad that you posted those pictures. It really shows that one betta in a 2.5g with some aquatic decore is plently. |

I found those lily flowers or whatever they are in the pond section. They make perfect little "hammocks" for them to lay down in close to the surface. I like the smooth caves. It's hard to find anything that is smooth enough for a betta. Everything I've ever ran my finger along was too sharp for my comfort. The bettas love those caves. I'm going to find a way to drill into the top of the tubes and drop a second airline that is connected to a battery operated air pump. The Penn Plax B11 kicks in the moment it senses power loss and I've had them run for 4 days on one test. Last edited by Cory_Di at 06-Mar-2005 18:49 |

I'm gonna have to look in the pond section and get one for my betta, so he has a place to sleep comfortably...Now I have to ask where did you find the cave? I have to get me at least one, but would like mroe if I can find them. Again, they look great:88) "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |

I have found them in two small, privately owned pet stores. How smart - to mold arch-caves out of smooth gravel. . Sometimes they have those little lilies in the pond plant section and other places have them mixed in with all the other fake plants. I got mine at PetSmart. I try to arrange the leaves, or at least one, against the glass in such a way as to make a cradle. Last edited by Cory_Di at 06-Mar-2005 19:32 |
