Opaline gourami breeding log | |
mughal113 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 160 Votes: 64 Registered: 16-Jun-2006 | Hi, My 15g planted tank was doing nothing with no fish in it and so was the pair of blue opalines I had in the 50g. Just thought of giving it a try to breed them. I put them in a week ago. The male instantly changed its colors and in an hour's time, was busy building a bubble nest. The female, however, was not much interested and spent its time hiding in the plants. Occasionaly, I used to see it swiming towards the nest, trying to destroy it and receiving some beating and chasing by the male. Here are a couple of photos of the male. It has three feelers! http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/mughal113/Fish/IMG_0455.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/mughal113/Fish/IMG_0452.jpg Could not get a photo of the female as I hardly saw it out of the hiding place. Here is a photo of the nest the male built. The photo was taken when it had just started to build the nest. http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/mughal113/Fish/IMG_0448.jpg And tonight, when I returned home from work, I was delighted to see coutless tiny eggs floating on the surface . The male was tending them; picking them up in his mouth and spitting them back to the nest. Here is a photo of the eggs. http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/mughal113/Fish/eggs.jpg And here is a nice close-up of the eggs I was able to get. The actual diameter of the eggs is 1mm maximum! http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/mughal113/Fish/eggs1.jpg Hopefully these will hatch in 36 hours...will hopefully be posting some pics of the fry soon |

I have two 3/4 inch dwarf gourami fry in my ten gallon right now. the breeding behaviors of gourami's is so interesting -Vincent |

The female is 3.5 inches and the male around 4 inches now. The third feeler is there since the very first day I had him. Actually, I noticed it only when I had brought it home, otherwise I might have rejected this specimen couting it as "abnormal". Now I'm happy I did not. Its more like one feeler split into two...but yes, it is weird Update: I could not separate the female yesterday and now in the morning, most of the eggs are gone. May be she ate them up. But I still have around a 100 eggs. Fingers crossed! |

mughal113 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 160 Votes: 64 Registered: 16-Jun-2006 | well, the dimensions are a bit unconventional. 23inches wide and 12 inches high. I just put in the gouramis for breeding purpose. Now they are back to the 50G. And yes, watching them breed is fun |

mughal113 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 160 Votes: 64 Registered: 16-Jun-2006 | Thanks everyone The forum is a really nice place to share the excitement Cup_of_Lifenoodles, as stated above, the tank is 15g densely planted. The last readings showed zero ammonia, nitrites and nitrates around 10ppm. Actually, the plants are starving for CO2 and fertilization as I stopped adding both once the eggs were laid. I'm sure nitrates would be close to nothing now. Temperature: A steady 27C Diet: The pair was conditioned on protein rich pellets (40% protein) and bloodworms. I started to feed the fry four days after they hatched, once their yolk sacks were completely used. I started off with dried egg yolk powder (recommended by my LFS owner friend). I've also started putting in some powdered FD bloodworms and some very finely crushed flakes. The tank shots are available in the planted tanks section in the thread "My First Planted Tank" by mughal113 |
