Hello,

I have had 2 blue gouramis for about 6 months or so now and they are quite shy, except for around feeding time. They dont seem to mind me then, but most times they are hiding behind the plants and driftwood. I am thinking it is becasue there arent many other mid-dwelling dither fish in the tank. I have rams which stay along the foreground plants and rocks at the bottom and a cory herd along the bottom too. There is also a small female flag fish but she feeds amonst the plants most of the time and doesnt ever make much of an appearance.

I am thinking a small school of tetras would make them less shy? I dont want to add much fish to this tank as it is a plant display tank and I want to save the room to expand my panda herd. But I figure a small tetra school wont make too much of a difference.

Thanks for the help.

Schooling fish may bring them out a little more but in a planted tank gouramis do tend to hang around behind plants. They will slowly cruise the tank staying right next to or just behind any objects. I actually have very few pictures where you can see all of my blue or opaline gouramis because they are always partially behind a rock, leaf, or chunk of driftwood. They prefer to stay along the edge of open swimming areas instead of crossing them. It's not so much that they are scared of you since mine act the same whether I'm right by the tank or across the room but that they often don't come completely out in the open unless they have a reason such as to get food they know is there. Otherwise they are always moving around areas of cover.

If they are blue gourami and not the opaline (which are often confused with) should be a bit more aggressive. I have school of only the opaline in my 5ft tank and even they prefer to hide in and under the plants a lot except at feeding times.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Yea, they are the blues, and they are quite aggressive towards each other. It is a male and female.
