Stocking a 10 | |
bananacoladafuze Enthusiast Posts: 170 Kudos: 147 Votes: 19 Registered: 20-Mar-2005 | Would three sparling gouramis, one male badis badis, and one male betta work in a ten, or would it be overstocked? I also have five khuli loaches I'd like to put in there. Can any of you tell me what would be the best combo for the tank? It's planted with anubias, tons of java fern, and some baby swordplants. The betta and badis badis aren't getting enough live food in the 55 where they are right now because the female betta chases them around whenever I feed. The males seem to get along pretty well, though. They hang out in the same part of the tank and I've never seen them fight. If the male betta won't work in the tank, I have a planted 2.5 I can put him into, and I also have room in other tanks for any fish that shouldn't go into the ten. ______________ Cake or death? |

A 10 gal. tank, should be understocked, as it's more difficult to keep. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Actually, I was trying to give a list of possible fish and have someone/people tell me what they thought would do well in there. *sighs* Guess I need to work on being more clear. ______________ Cake or death? |

Two Tanks Big Fish Posts: 449 Kudos: 328 Votes: 13 Registered: 02-Jun-2003 | I wouldn't put the gourami and betta together as they are both labyrith - top dwellers. In a ten, it would be too close quarters for them. I am not sure about the others, but it sounds a bit overstocked. Small fish, two inches or under, are better for a ten. |

bananacoladafuze Enthusiast Posts: 170 Kudos: 147 Votes: 19 Registered: 20-Mar-2005 | Huh. My sparkling gouramis always stay near the bottom of the tank in the swordplants. I -hope- they decide to come out more often and hang out near the top. That would be awesome. So, only two of them in there, then? Sounds like a good excuse to buy another tank. What how many gallons would you suggest for just the three gouramis? And yes, the male betta is alread in the 2.5 by himself. The other fish will just stay where they are.. How does the five khulis and a (calm) female betta in a 25 sound? ______________ Cake or death? |

illustrae Fish Addict Posts: 820 Kudos: 876 Registered: 04-May-2005 | A group of sparkling gouramis would do fine in a 10, but I would not put a male badis-badis with a betta at all. The sparklers and a betta would be okay in a 10. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

I had a pair in my ten and the water quality can fluctuate very quickly. In my opinion they would be far better suited for a larger tank as the water parameters would be more stable. You could easily put some kuhlies in there, they like a sandy bottom. You could put a betta in there and He'd be very happy, but adding gouramis with him might be disastrous. Betta don't really prefer critters with longer finnage. I have a betta in my ten, he loves it, but I'm gonna get him a buddy or two in a few weeks, perhaps a cory or an otto. Maybe a few snails, hmmmm. Small tanks can be easy to maintain but the water changes must be strictly adhered to, and undertsocking it would be a good idea. |

This is what I'm thinking now: (please let me know if anything sounds wrong) The five khulis and three sparkling gouramis will go in the 25. It's got a sandy substrate and a ton of fake plants and small terra cotta pots. The male betta will go in his own (planted) 2.5 and the badis badis will stay in the 55 with my pencilfish and guppies, where he won't have to worry about fighting for his food. (The corys take forever to find the little bowl of bloodworms I put in for him, even though it's always in the same place.) My friend is going to take her female betta back (the one that's been really aggressive), so I won't have to worry about her anymore. .... and one of my friends came over with a little dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus, by the looks of it) and, after researching it -after- she bought it for me, it's going in my ten by itself. Oh, and I do 10-20% water changes every three days on the 25 and the 10, and the water quality seems to be okay so far. ______________ Cake or death? |
